Chianti boasts the DOCG denomination and is produced in an area of eight municipalities: Barberino Val d'Elsa, Greve in Chianti, San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in the province of Florence; Gaiole, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Radda and part of the municipality of Poggibonsi in the province of Siena. Chianti Classico wine is characterised by a brilliant ruby colour and a deeply vinous aroma. The taste is dry and savoury, although it tends to become more velvety with time. Furthermore,Chianti Classico wine must age for at least 11 months and have a minimum alcohol content of 12°. A Historical Connection and the Origins of the Name

The history of the name 'Chianti' seems to derive from the Latin word 'clangor', recalling the ancient hunting parties in the Tuscan woods. Other theories link it to the Etruscan 'Clante', in honour of the local noble families. Historical documents tell of the ancient league composed of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, symbolised by the black rooster. It was in these municipalities and others in Florence and Siena that the Chianti Classico appellation was born, recognised by the black rooster.

Characteristics and Production Areas

Chianti production is divided into seven sub-zones, including the historic Chianti Classico. Each zone can give rise to two types: Chianti Riserva, aged for at least two years, three of which in the bottle; and Chianti Superiore, with stricter regulations, requiring a minimum alcohol content of 12%. Since 2013, Chianti Gran Selezione has been introduced, reserved for Classico wines aged for at least 30 months.
