The Charm of the Chianti Territory

Chianti is a landscape of natural beauty, a pictorial picture adorned with the silver of olive trees, the elegance of cypress trees, evocative castles, medieval villages, chestnut and oak woods, and vast vineyards. In this scenery, the undisputed protagonist is Sangiovese, an exceptional red grape variety, which, combined with local varieties such as Canaiolo, gives life to Chianti wine, a symbol of the art of wine-making and Italian tradition.

A Historical Connection and the Origins of the Name

The history of the name 'Chianti' seems to derive from the Latin word 'clangor', recalling the ancient hunting parties in the Tuscan woods. Other theories link it to the Etruscan 'Clante', in honour of the local noble families. Historical documents tell of the ancient league composed of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, symbolised by the black rooster. It was in these municipalities and others in Florence and Siena that the Chianti Classico appellation was born, recognised by the black rooster.

Characteristics and Production Areas

Chianti production is divided into seven sub-zones, including the historic Chianti Classico. Each zone can give rise to two types: Chianti Riserva, aged for at least two years, three of which in the bottle; and Chianti Superiore, with stricter regulations, requiring a minimum alcohol content of 12%. Since 2013, Chianti Gran Selezione has been introduced, reserved for Classico wines aged for at least 30 months.

Chianti is a great Italian wine, rooted in tradition and constantly striving for quality. It has a ruby red colour, tending to garnet with age. The intense and complex aromas recall red and black fruit, with floral hints of violets and roses. Ageing in wood adds spicy and tertiary notes of tobacco, cocoa and undergrowth. On the palate, Chianti offers freshness, tannic astringency and a long finish.
