Savoy

Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments have small wineries on France's best ski area. They are located south of Lake Geneva in the Upper Rhône area, in the valley on the Lac du Bourget and along the Isère. The wine is cultivated up to 500 m above sea level, but the best sites are at 300 m on the lakes and on the Rhône. Both red and white wines are fresh, very pleasant to drink, often with perlage and dry, although they may show some sweetness. The character of white wines often resembles that of the Fendant wines of Switzerland. The reds were left to influence the western neighbor, the Beaujolais. Only the sparkling wines attracted some attention outside the region.
