Marchese di Villamarina is a Sardinian wine with a DOC designation, whose production is permitted in the countryside of the province of Sassari - specifically in Alghero. Sardinia boasts a very wide range of grape varieties, and its famous tourist destination is one of the few cities that can boast a namesake designation of origin. This Marchese di Villamarina is in fact an Alghero Cabernet, made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. A flagship product of the renowned Sella & Mosca winery, their vineyards extend over 650 hectares of pure Mediterranean scrub, among eucalyptus, pine, and oleander. It's no surprise that this exceptionally balanced red wine is the pride of its winery and of Alghero in general, having nothing to envy of its French siblings. Dedicated to the noble Sardinian family, Marchese di Villamarina is an aristocratic wine not only in name—but above all in fact. The clayey, mineral-rich soil, the reassuring sunny climate, the mild winters, and the salty sea air contribute to making Marchese di Villamarina a truly special wine. The vines have plenty of time to absorb the summer heat, as the harvest takes place in late autumn and the bunches are hand-picked with careful selection of each grape. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the wine is left to mature in Tronçais barriques for fourteen months, then in regular barrels for another year, and then in bottle for another eighteen months. Continuing with the aging in the bottle will make your tasting experience even more refined.
