Domaine Gerard Boulay

Domaine Gérard Boulay has 11 hectares of densely planted vines at 8,000 vines per hectare in the town of Chavignon. These steep southern slopes provide the vineyards with a distinct terroir that allows Gérard to produce beautiful Sancerre year after year consistently.
While extremely humble at just over 60 years of age, Gérard Boulay takes pride in his vineyard work. All the vines are worked and harvested by hand, with only four workers assisting him in the vineyards. Gérard's primary goal is to express not the grapes but the soil from which they thrive. Domaine's smallest vines were planted in 1972, allowing an average age of over 50 years. With Domaine's vineyards planted on the slopes of the Chavignol kimmeridgian or 'terre blanche' soils, the terroir of Chavignol shines through all of Gérard's wines.
All the company wines ferment naturally in the cellar as no yeast is ever added. The use of sulphur is minimal and only the Sancerre blanc Chavignol Tradition undergoes light filtration if necessary before bottling. Each of Gérard's Chavignol terroirs (Clos de Beaujeu, Mont Damnés, La Côte and Comtesse) undergoes ageing on the lees in used oak. In particular, we should note the historic Comtesse region of 70-year-old vines in the lower part of Mont Damnés; a wine of intense beauty and structure. Given the aromaticity, texture and crystalline purity of his sauvignon blancs, few producers make wine in Sancerre to the quantity of Gérard Boulay.
