Description
What kind of wine it is
Pitasso Derthona Colli Tortonesi by Claudio Mariotto is a still white wine from Piedmont, made from Timorasso grapes. In the glass, it reveals an elegant style and a silky structure, supported by vibrant freshness and savouriness. On the nose, it expresses floral and fruity aromas, with clear hints of chamomile, rose and lemon verbena. On the palate, it stands out for its enveloping sip, enriched by notes of ripe plums, liquorice and citrus fruits, leading to a distinct mineral imprint. The finish is long, characterised by nuances of walnut, toasted almond and a distinctive flinty closure.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, at the heart of the Colli Tortonesi and the prestigious Derthona subzone. The vineyards stretch between the municipalities of Vho and Sarezzano, at an altitude of 250-300 metres. The south-east exposure and the microclimate influenced by the proximity of the Apennines and the sea create the ideal environment for viticulture. The calcareous-clay soils give the wine the typical acidic tension and pronounced savouriness of the area. The vines, trained using the Guyot system, ensure great aromatic concentration, fully reflecting the terroir of the Colli Tortonesi.
How it is produced
The manual harvest takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October, preserving the integrity of the Timorasso bunches. In the cellar, vinification begins with a gentle pressing and racking, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature to maintain aromatic precision. The wine rests in maturation on fine lees, known as noble lees, for a period of at least ten months. This stage enriches the flavour profile, giving a remarkable glyceric density and prolonged persistence, ideal for encouraging a splendid evolution over time.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1920, the Claudio Mariotto winery is a leading figure in the revival of Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi, thanks to the care of vines over forty years old located in Vho and Sarezzano. From this complex and fascinating grape variety comes Pitasso 2022, a white wine with intense aromas derived from the grape’s natural norisoprenoids. The meticulous ageing on fine lees gives the wine a silky, enveloping structure, enhancing its minerality and bestowing this masterpiece with excellent ageing potential, capable of delighting over time.

Our vineyards enjoy a favourable microclimate as they are located close to the Apennines overlooking the Po Valley and influenced by the proximity of the sea, which is only 60 km away as the crow flies. We define our method of cultivation as common sense agriculture, without the use of pesticides, with pruning and leafing that respects the vines.
Claudio Mariotto in the early 1990s, together with a few other local winegrowers, believed in an abandoned indigenous vine like Timorasso to produce a great Piedmontese white wine for ageing.
Thanks to his daily life in contact with the vineyard, Claudio decided to give value to his work by bottling the wine he produced. Read more
