Description
What kind of wine is it
Eruzione 1614 Carricante Planeta is an organic still white wine, an authentic expression of Sicily. It is created from a blend of Carricante and Riesling grapes. The bouquet offers notes of ripe fruit, white flowers, green apple, wild honey and hints of menthol. On the palate, it combines softness and tension, revealing hints of lemon zest. A pronounced minerality extends the sip, making it intensely savoury. It is perfect paired with shellfish, oysters and seafood crudités.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from the Etna region, between the Feudo di Mezzo estate and the Sciara Nuova cru. The vines are cultivated using the Guyot training system at over eight hundred metres above sea level, surrounded by woods and ancient lava flows. The black volcanic soil, rich in sand and minerals, gives a unique imprint to the roots. This harsh mountain terroir shapes the taut character and remarkable freshness of a blend destined for a fascinating evolution over time.
How is it produced
The harvest takes place in October, respecting the optimal ripening times. The bunches, promptly refrigerated, undergo gentle pressing. The clarified must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. The wine matures through careful ageing on fine lees, with frequent stirring. This technique enhances the taste structure and smoothness, while carefully preserving the delicate varietal aromas.
History and Curiosities
The legendary eruption of 1614, which lasted ten years, stopped right at the edge of the Sciara Nuova vineyards, inspiring the name of this fascinating Planeta cru. The Eruzione 1614 Carricante is made from organically grown grapes on black volcanic soils, with a touch of Riesling that enhances its vibrant minerality. This elegant white captures the essence of Etna through intense aromas, winning over the most discerning palates and international critics, as demonstrated by the prestigious 94/100 from Vinous and 92/100 from Robert Parker awarded to the 2023 vintage.
