Description

Extra Brut Classic Method Champagne, produced by Philipponnat, a historic Champagne house since 1522. Blend: 72% Pinot Noir, 28% Chardonnay. 0.75 L bottle, 2018 vintage. An excellence that celebrates the history of Champagne, with timeless elegance and a unique expression of terroir. Some of the wines are vinified in wood and do not undergo malolactic fermentation, preserving all the freshness of the wine and allowing it to acquire greater complexity. Both full-bodied and acidic, this cuvée lends itself perfectly to a low, extra-brut dosage of just 4.25 g/L, one-third of the classic brut dosage of Champagne. Eight years on the lees allow it to retain its original freshness. A pink color with coppery highlights. Perlage with fine, lively bubbles. An expressive and open initial nose, intertwining delicious notes of warm bread and honey. A lovely richness expressed through notes of honey, caramelized mirabelle plums, and light vanilla. The finish is tart, typical of this vintage.

Apvril Le Philipponnat (the ‘Le’ was subsequently dropped during the French Revolution) was the earliest member of the family to settle in Champagne. Captain of a Swiss military unit from the canton of Fribourg, he joined the French military during the war between Francis I and Italy. He is known to have married Marie d’Ambonnay, through whom he owned vineyards in Mareuil and Ay. The House dates its establishment in the Champagne region from 1522. Apvril is mentioned as the owner of Ay on this date in the will of Dom Jean Royer, the last Regular Abbot of Hautvillers.

In 1696, Apvril’s descendants, who were often ‘Royal Mayors’ of Ay, registered the family coat of arms in the Armorial de France. Today, this same coat of arms adorns all the House’s bottles. ?The labels of Philipponnat, vineyard owners and wine merchants, were among the first to bear the signature of sparkling Champagnes as early as the mid-19th century.
