Description
A still red from Tuscany, 14% ABV, produced by Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) in the prestigious Bolgheri area. 100% Merlot, a grape variety that expresses its full potential in this terroir. 0.75 L bottle, 2023 vintage. Tenuta Guado al Tasso extends over approximately 320 hectares of vineyards in a splendid plain surrounded by hills known as the "Bolgheri amphitheater." The selection was made from the finest Merlot grapes from the estate's 40 hectares of vineyards. On the nose, notes of small red fruits such as cherry, morello cherry, and raspberry stand out, accompanied by aromas of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. Intense ruby red. On the palate, it is striking for its silky tannins, a wine with good persistence, great balance, and pleasantness.

The noble Della Gherardesca family began practicing viticulture in the late 1600’s on their land in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under the guidance of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was a passionate about viticulture. He was appointed majordomo of Grand Duke Leopold II and then dedicated himself to enology in his family’s land in Maremma. In the 1930’s, the property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca Antinori (Piero Antinori’s mother) and her sister who was married to Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (who received the nearby Tenuta San Guido). | Wine making | The selection was made from the best Merlot grapes from the estate's 40 hectares of vineyards. After manual harvesting and careful selection in the cellar, the grapes were transferred to thermo-conditioned stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation and maceration took place over a period of about 20 days. The fermentation temperature was managed according to the ripeness level of the grapes: some at lower temperatures to maintain greater aromatic freshness, others at temperatures of around 30 °C to emphasise polyphenolic extraction and structure. This resulted in different types of Merlot that were transferred to barrels separately. |
| Aging | Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques (1/3 new) and was completed by the end of the year. After 8 months of elevation in French oak, the best batches were blended and put back into barriques for a further 4 months. At the end of this period, the wine was bottled. The wine matured in the bottle for approximately 6 months before release. |
