Medieval and Historical Ties

The origins of the village Bolgheri date back to the early Middle Ages, when it emerged as a military outpost of the Bulgarians, allies of the Lombards, to protect the territory from possible threats. In the 12th century, a medieval castle was built, belonging to the Della Berardesca counts, who dominated the area for many centuries.

The village of Bolgheri developed around the medieval castle, creating an enchanting historic centre. The journey to Bolgheri passes through the famous Viale dei Cipressi, immortalised in the poetry of Giosue Carducci. Bolgheri Rosso DOC: Tradition and Soul

The rise of Bolgheri Rosso wine began in the 1970s, thanks to Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and the creation of Sassicaia. However, the wine-growing roots go back to Etruscan traces. The Gherardesca family, from the 17th century onwards, played a key role in wine-growing development, identifying the ideal areas for cultivation: San Guido, Belvedere, Lamentano, Felciaino and Grattamacco.

Sassicaia: Icon of Oenological Excellence

The 1970s and 1980s heralded the international triumph of Sassicaia and the renowned Tenuta San Guido, gaining worldwide acclaim. This success inspired numerous local producers to follow suit, quickly achieving global fame.

The Quality Mark: Bolgheri Rosso DOC

In 1983, the Bolgheri Rosso DOC specification was born, and in 1995 the Consorzio di Tutela, led by Marquis Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, was created. Some 41 wineries are part of this consortium, cultivating land in the Castagneto Carducci area that conforms to DOC specifications.

A Viticultural and Sensory Harmony

The hilly terroir, the soil and the sunny climate caressed by the sea breeze allow the cultivation of international grape varieties. The DOC stipulates the use of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Sangiovese grapes, while also allowing other red varieties up to 30%. Ageing is a crucial constraint to ensure fullness of flavour.

A Combination of Tasting and Emotional Notes

Bolgheri Rosso wines, labelled Bolgheri Rosso Superiore, require at least 2 years of ageing, of which at least 12 months in oak barrels. The use of French oak barrels gives the softness and complexity of sweet spices, a distinctive sensory signature.
