Description
What kind of wine it is
Dopff & Irion Chateau Riquewihr Gewurztraminer Alsace Grand Cru Sporen is an aromatic still white wine made from Gewürztraminer grapes. Within the excellence of Alsace Grand Cru Sporen, it stands out for its brilliant golden colour and intense aromatic profile. On the nose, there are notes of candied fruit such as coconut, apricot and mirabelle, combined with honeyed nuances and floral hints of lilac and jasmine. The palate offers a bold attack, balanced freshness and a persistent caramelised fruitiness that accompanies the sip through to the finish, making it ideal for pairing with mature cheeses and spicy dishes.
Where it comes from
The roots of this Gewürztraminer lie in Riquewihr, Alsace, at the heart of the renowned Sporen terroir. The vineyards are located in a natural basin that retains the sun's warmth, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. The rich, deep soils give the wine precise minerality and a structured texture. Vineyard work reflects the dedication of Dopff & Irion, a historic estate founded in 1549, which rigorously interprets the natural qualities expressed by this exceptional region.
How it is produced
Production begins with meticulous manual harvesting. In the winery, the grapes undergo gentle pneumatic pressing, a delicate process aimed at preserving the integrity of the must. Vinification continues in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, maintaining the grape variety's aromatic character and expressive clarity. The process concludes with six months of ageing on fine lees, followed by a period of rest in vats, steps that ensure an ideal balance between freshness and flavour intensity.

At the end of the war, two of the biggest names in viticulture in Riquewihr, René Dopff and the widow Irion, joined forces to found Dopff & Irion. René Dopff was an emblematic and prestigious wine producer who, for several decades, had a huge influence on the vineyards of Alsace by putting the emphasis on quality (by reducing yields, for example) and modernising the labels.
