Description

What kind of spirit is this

Amaro Balsamico 1890 by Quaglia is an organic Italian herbal liqueur with a structured and smooth profile. Displaying a dark amber colour, it is crafted from a meticulously selected blend of botanicals. The palate reveals a rounded depth of rhubarb and cocoa, introducing a delicate sweetness balanced by crisp, bitter nuances. A distinct balsamic freshness elevates the tasting experience, leading to a persistent peppermint finish. With a 19% ABV, it serves as an elegant after-dinner digestif, best enjoyed neat or over ice to fully release its complex aromatic character.

Where it comes from

Produced in Castelnuovo Don Bosco in the Piedmont region, this amaro embodies a deep-rooted mastery of botanical liqueurs. The local environment influences its distinctive spiced and mint-led character, reflecting the authentic identity of Quaglia. Crafted entirely from carefully sourced natural ingredients, the production adheres strictly to rigorous standards, having achieved full organic certification. This commitment guarantees a high-quality liqueur that authentically represents the rich heritage of Italian botanical craftsmanship.

How it is produced

The creation of this liqueur follows historical methods and handcrafted practices, beginning with the precise extraction of its core botanicals. Rhubarb, cocoa and peppermint are combined to establish a rich foundation. Following the blending stage, the liquid undergoes a period of slow artisanal ageing, which is crucial for allowing the sweet and bitter components to fully integrate. This resting phase harmonises the vibrant menthol notes with the spiced undertones, ensuring a highly persistent profile and a beautifully structured herbal liqueur that delivers a smooth tasting experience.

History and Heritage

Originating in Piedmont, this exquisite liqueur embodies the legacy of Antica Distilleria Quaglia, established in 1890. Based on a century-old recipe, the family formula has been refined over generations, guided by a philosophy of ‘experiment through tradition’. By blending meticulously selected herbs, roots, flowers, and spices with slow artisanal ageing, each batch develops a profound complexity. Demonstrating a commitment to authentic quality, the estate achieved organic certification in 2018, ensuring this historic elixir remains a genuine expression of Italian heritage.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1890
  • Oenologist: Carlo Quaglia
The company was established in 1890, a few years after the Unification of Italy, under the sun of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, an area with a deep wine tradition between Turin and Monferrato. Distelleria Quaglia is rooted in an invaluable heritage of recipes, secrets and precious knowledge that have been handed down for four generations and defy the passage of time by keeping their value intact.

The production of high-quality liqueurs and spirits soon joined the production of grappa in the early years. The company's philosophy is to operate in symbiosis with the land, respecting the raw materials it gives us and protecting the rules that protect it. For this reason, Distelleria Quaglia has been certified as an Organic Distillery since 2018.

Each liqueur writes a story of the terroir and raw materials as the company believes that the distiller's art is to tell it by seeking the perfect combination of aromas and sensations. Time is the secret ingredient combined with patience and rest, one of the most important aspects to take the product to a higher level of quality.

Craftsmanship is the key. The company starts preparing the liqueur by looking for excellence in the raw materials and processing them by hand to preserve all the properties intact.
