Description
Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva is a still red wine DOC produced in Emilia Romagna and obtained from a blend of 95% Sangiovese grapes and the remaining 5% Merlot. The history of Sangiovese dates back to the time of the Etruscans and its diffusion in Emilia Romagna dates back to the late 1600s, the years in which the first written documents regarding its cultivation date back to, until its spread throughout Italy. Furthermore, the DOC designation was added in 1967. The growing areas include the provinces of Rimini, Forlì-Cesena, Bologna and Ravenna and are located on the hills of the region at an altitude of approximately 450 meters above sea level. The soil in these areas is predominantly sandstone, and the vines are planted in the traditional terraced system. The climate is temperate. A typical example of this wine is the Probi di Papiano from Fattoria Villa Papiano, a Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva, which displays all its typical organoleptic characteristics, starting with its dark red color and intense flavor, achieved thanks to its long maturation. Indeed, the vinification involves temperature-controlled maceration in steel tanks and subsequent malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The refinement then takes place in French oak tonneaux and barriques for twelve months and as many months in the bottle, which gives this wine those particular aromas that differentiate it from the classic Sangiovese, such as the unmistakable aroma of red fruits and the balanced flavour.
