Description

What kind of wine it is

Barbaresco Gallina is a refined red wine from Piedmont, produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. Visually, it displays a ruby colour enriched with elegant garnet hues, while the bouquet reveals enveloping notes of liquorice, pepper, leather and rose petals. On the palate, it expresses a full-bodied and austere character, supported by a rigorous structural balance. It pairs magnificently with meat stews, braised game and mature cheeses, making it ideal even as a meditation wine.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Neive, in the heart of the renowned Gallina hill, a territory of excellence historically linked to the Riccardi Candiani Counts. Ugo Lequio cultivates vines in this area that are over forty years old, situated between 170 and 250 metres above sea level with perfect southern exposure. These particular pedoclimatic conditions ensure a consistent ripening of the Nebbiolo, giving the wine a solid structure and remarkable longevity, capable of evolving elegantly for over a decade.

How it is produced

Vinification involves fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, accompanied by maceration on the skins for fifteen to eighteen days to precisely extract the colour and aromatic components. The wine then matures for twenty months in Slavonian oak barrels, a fundamental step to refine the tannic texture, before completing its ageing with six months of rest in the bottle. This production process ensures a profound drinking experience and a harmonious flavour profile.

History and Curiosities

The Barbaresco Gallina originates in Neive, on a hill historically owned by the Counts Riccardi Candiani. The Ugo Lequio winery, founded in 1981, enhances the legacy of this prestigious area thanks to historic vineyards planted in 1953, 1963 and 1971. From pure Nebbiolo grapes comes the renowned 2019 vintage, which has won over critics with ratings of up to 94 points. A production of thirty thousand bottles seals a work of excellence, characterised by a remarkable longevity of 10-15 years.

Great always comes from a far-sighted project, but without the unparalleled ambition to give the best, nothing truly great can develop. Ugo's philosophy can be traced back to this, a small company that participates in wine culture by bringing its contribution of professionalism and progress.

At the beginning of the 1980s, he signed his first bottles, personally selecting the grapes from six hectares of vineyard at "Cascina Nuova", a farm located in the heart of the historic Gallina hill, once part of the great wine-growing estate of the Lords of Neive Conti Riccardi Candiani, now owned by Marcarino.

The precious experience acquired over time, research and experimentation in the vineyard and in the cellar, have contributed to making this producer a protagonist of the quality revolution that, in recent years, has led to the emergence of an elitist wine culture.

The conviction that a great wine is born over time and that waiting, managed without anxiety, gives it class, importance and longevity, leads Ugo to place his bottles on the market only after a long and proper rest.
