Description

What kind of wine it is

The Mascot Napa Valley is a still red wine from California that precisely interprets Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in the young plots of Harlan. In the glass, it displays a deep red colour, a prelude to a bouquet characterised by a wide range of fruity and aromatic notes. On the palate, it is delicate and velvety, supported by refined tannins that lend elegance to the drink. To fully enjoy it, it is recommended to serve at 18-20°C after a one-hour decanting. This wine boasts a remarkable capacity for evolution, with an estimated ageing potential of between fifteen and twenty-five years.

Where it comes from

The identity of this red is deeply linked to the Napa Valley, a prime area for North American viticulture. The Mascot project focuses on grapes from the youngest vines of Harlan. The nature of the sedimentary and rocky soil strongly influences the wine's profile, endowing it with a solid and distinctive structure. This geological matrix encourages a fine tannic texture and an intense colour, while preserving the fruity component and ensuring a balanced sip, a direct expression of the pedoclimatic characteristics of its place of origin.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a manual harvest, aimed at preserving the integrity of the bunches. The production outlines a wine with a fine texture and an orderly stylistic approach. At the table, its aromatic weave and velvety structure pair perfectly with elaborate pork or game dishes, as well as accompanying grilled meats. It also proves to be an ideal match for the strong flavour of mature cheeses, guaranteeing a prolonged and structured tasting experience.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 2007, The Mascot is the Harlan family's project dedicated to enhancing the value of the young vineyards of Napa Valley. This Cabernet Sauvignon is born from rocky and sedimentary soils that give it a distinctive structure. The grapes from the 2019 vintage were harvested by hand, resulting in an exclusive production of 80,000 bottles. Thanks to a remarkable ageing potential that can reach up to 25 years, this red wine celebrates the finest Californian tradition, proving to be a masterpiece of elegance, perfect for tasting or for keeping in the cellar.

The Mascot began as a family wine, unnamed, unlabeled—a blend made for and poured at our own table. The components were of the highest pedigree, harvested from the younger vines of the Harlan family domain.

The domain traces its beginning to the founding in 1984 of Harlan Estate, located in the western hills of Oakville and conceived as a "first growth of California." In 1996, the family established BOND, a portfolio of "Grand Cru" vineyards whose wines showcase the range of expression of Cabernet Sauvignon across distinct geographical sites within the Napa Valley.

Promontory, whose land the family acquired in 2008, is led by the family’s second generation and represents a 21st-century approach to winegrowing.

As these varied sites were gradually replanted, many of the young vines contributed to my project. Yet, despite these distinguished origins, my early endeavor could only hint at the individual character embodied by each of our grands vins.
