Description

What kind of wine is it

Lagrein Gries Riserva from Cantina Terlano is a red wine that faithfully interprets the native Lagrein grape within the Alto Adige Riserva framework. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red colour with garnet highlights and violet nuances. The bouquet reveals earthy and mineral notes that blend with aromas of morello cherry, plum jam, and hints of cocoa and tobacco. On the palate, it offers a complex fullness, supported by velvety tannins and well-balanced freshness, finishing with a long, fruity aftertaste. Ideal with red meats, game and mature cheeses.

Where does it come from

The vineyards grow in the renowned Gries area, on the outskirts of Bolzano, benefiting from south and south-west exposures at altitudes between 250 and 500 metres. The roots delve into deep alluvial soils, sandy, stony and rich in porphyry, which ensure excellent drainage and give the wine a pronounced mineral drive. The valley’s warm microclimate allows for optimal ripening, essential for concentrating black fruit aromas while maintaining impeccable balance. Ancient documents show that as early as 1379 these Gries lands were considered the natural habitat for cultivating Lagrein, confirming an invaluable historical connection.

How is it produced

The process begins with manual harvesting and destemming, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The must is handled gently to achieve a measured extraction of tannins and aromas. Malolactic fermentation helps to harmonise the flavour profile. Afterwards, the wine matures for twelve months in oak barrels, developing intriguing aromatic complexity and elegant spicy notes. Finally, the final blend is assembled three months before bottling for perfect balance.

History and Curiosities

As early as 1379, ancient sources celebrated the alluvial soils of Gries as the ideal habitat for the native South Tyrolean grape variety. The renowned Cantina Terlano, guardian of this tradition since 1893, enhances this heritage with the exceptional 2022 vintage, awarded 93 points by Vinous. Under the guidance of oenologist Rudi Kofler, the grapes benefit from a terroir rich in porphyry, resulting in a wine with a mineral allure, capable of enchanting with deep notes of dark fruits and a full and balanced body of pure elegance.
