Description
What kind of wine it is
Visellio Primitivo is an enveloping red wine by Tenute Rubino, an authentic expression of Salento. It stands out for its vigorous and full-bodied profile, balanced by a pronounced freshness and mature, silky tannins. Its bouquet, complex and profound, opens with intense aromas of spirit-soaked plums, blackcurrants, and blueberry jam. This rich fruity component then elegantly gives way to spicy sensations, where notes of cloves, nutmeg, and star anise intertwine with delicate hints of violet and liquorice.
Where it comes from
This red originates in the province of Brindisi, in Apulia, within the Jaddico estate, on plots historically linked to the figure of Visellio. The vines sink their roots into medium-textured soil with a strong presence of stones, a natural composition ideal for promoting a marked aromatic concentration and great flavour definition. The winery manages its rows following a strict organic and sustainable approach, maintaining the vineyard's balance with low yields to preserve the authentic expressive quality of the area.
How it is produced
The Primitivo grapes are carefully harvested at the beginning of September from vines trained using the spurred cordon method. In the winery, temperature-controlled maceration lasts for eighteen days in steel tanks, extracting a deep ruby colour and an extremely fine tactile texture. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes ageing in barrels for eight months, then rests for an equally long period in the bottle. This process consolidates the structural complexity, while preserving the wine's fruity character intact.
History and Curiosities
Visellio Primitivo is born from the excellence of Tenute Rubino, a prestigious family-run winery in Brindisi. This renowned cru of Salento IGT celebrates the deep-rooted winemaking traditions of the region, paying homage to the lands where, centuries ago, Visellio cultivated his vineyards. The 2021 vintage, produced under the expert guidance of oenologist Luca Petrelli at the historic Jaddico estate, comes to life from rows of vines trained using the spurred cordon method, following a strict organic and sustainable approach. An authentic expression that harmoniously blends ancient history with outstanding contemporary winemaking.

Both the traditions of Salento and a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit have been passed down from Tommaso to his son, Luigi, who has since taken over with the support of his wife, Romina. Luigi has undertaken this entrepreneurial legacy, pouring all of his passion into the family’s winery and making it a global ambassador of Apulian viticulture.
After all, winemaking is an ancient art here in Jaddico: over the years, archaeologists have brought to light a Roman manor house filled with kilns, where Visellio—the owner of the estate—fired the amphorae used to export his wine to the four corners of the Roman Empire. At the time, this land was home to extensive vineyards and served as an important manufacturing center for wine containers.
Tenute Rubino is an Apulian brand with a strong international market presence. The company has consistently and successfully exported its labels to 20 countries such as the US, Canada and Brazil. Read more
