Description

What kind of wine it is

Villa Gresti di San Leonardo is an elegant red wine created from a meticulous blend of Merlot and Carménère. A true expression of Trentino’s vocation, it reveals a bouquet where wild berries, green pepper and hints of balsamic resin stand out. On the palate, it is distinguished by a harmonious structure, supported by velvety tannins that envelop the mouth. Its balanced freshness and vibrant acidity lead to a long, persistent finish, making it ideal for pairing with flavourful roasts, game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes are sourced from the vineyards of Avio, located in the heart of Vallagarina at the foot of the imposing Dolomites. The area benefits from an alpine climate with Mediterranean influences, an ideal combination for imparting finesse to the grapes. Produced by San Leonardo following organic and sustainable practices, this red wine reflects a deep respect for the environment. The influence of the mountains ensures the development of a clear aromatic profile and a refined texture, giving the wine a solid structure and extraordinary longevity.

How it is produced

Production involves spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small cement vats. During this phase, which lasts about fifteen days, pumping over and délestage are carried out to extract colour and soften the tannic texture. Ageing continues for twelve months in first-passage French oak barrels, enhancing the aromatic complexity in a balanced way. The result is an elegant vegan red wine, perfect for enhancing important dinners or accompanying moments of contemplation.

History and Curiosities

Originating from Vallagarina, at the foot of the Dolomites, Villa Gresti di San Leonardo is the iconic label of a historic estate founded in 1724. Created under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini, this prestigious red wine comes from the oldest vineyards on the property, the result of organic and sustainable production. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in full respect of vegan philosophy, it embodies the perfect combination of Alpine climate and Mediterranean influences. Awarded 5 Grappoli Bibenda and 93 points by Luca Maroni, it boasts a longevity of up to 15 years.

More than 1000 years ago, it was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda.

The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance.
