Description

What kind of spirit is this?

Segnana Grappa Solera Collezione by Segnana (Gruppo Lunelli) is a Grappa from Trentino-Alto Adige, crafted through distillation and Solera ageing from the grape pomace of Ferrari sparkling wines and local Trentino red grapes. Displaying a rich amber colour, its aromatic profile offers distinct vanilla and citrus notes alongside refined spicy hints. At 42% alcohol, the palate is velvety and enveloping, delivering a smooth, well-integrated finish with impressive persistence.

Where it comes from

Hailing from Trentino-Alto Adige in northern Italy, this spirit reflects a historic distilling heritage that Segnana has cultivated since 1860. Its regional identity is firmly rooted in the use of high-quality local raw materials. By combining pomace from renowned sparkling wine bases with robust red grape varieties, the distillery creates an intensely fragrant profile. This meticulous selection process enhances the natural varietal character, resulting in a distinctive regional identity that honours the local culture of grape pomace distillation.

How it is produced

Production begins with the precise distillation of selected grape pomace to capture its primary aromas. Maturation takes place using a Solera ageing system, where the spirit spends a prolonged period resting in fine-wood casks. This extended wood ageing creates the characteristic amber colour and softens the spirit’s impact. By slowly developing complexity, this method infuses the grappa with gentle spicy aromas, resulting in a smooth and enveloping texture with a beautifully balanced profile.

History and Heritage

Crafted in Trentino-Alto Adige by Segnana, part of the Gruppo Lunelli, this spirit honours a distilling heritage dating back to 1860. A notable aspect of its creation is the unique use of pomace from Ferrari sparkling wines, connecting two esteemed regional traditions.

From this winery
It was in 1860 that Paolo Segnana, from Borgo Valsugana, created one of the few mobile distilleries in history. He installed his alembics on a horse-drawn cart and began travelling from valley to valley, and from farm to farm, processing the freshly squeezed grape pomace. The grappa had to be distilled within twenty-four hours of the grapes being pressed, as the inflexible legislation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire dictated. In 1982 Segnana was taken over by the Lunelli family, producer of the Ferrari sparkling wines: a natural progression, seeing that the Lunellis were among the most important suppliers of pomace.

Segnana grappa is in fact partly made from the grape marc left over from the soft pressing of the grapes used to produce Ferrari. The short time interval from grape pressing to insertion in the stills makes sure that the grape marc doesn’t lose any of the original aromas, flavour and fragrances.

The traditional Bain-Marie batch distillation procedure is enriched by the application of innovative technical expedients gleaned from years of research carried out by Segnana’s master distillers in collaboration with the Edmund Mach foundation in San Michele all’Adige.

The grape marc conservation procedure in embedded tanks with hydraulic gaskets is unique and extraordinarily efficient while the patented secondary phlegm distillation system used in particular vintages allows the purest part of the grape marc to be sublimated. Once distilled the grappa is allowed to rest and age for several months in steel tanks where it is embellisgrappahed with elegance, smoothness and harmony.
