Description
What kind of wine it is
San Felice Poggio Rosso is a still red wine that deeply embodies the soul of its native land. It is made from a blend of Sangiovese, Colorino and Pugnitello grapes. Produced as a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, it offers a highly complex sensory experience. Visually, it presents an intense ruby red hue, enriched with garnet reflections. On the palate, the fullness of the body merges with noble, silky tannins, balanced by a pleasant freshness. Its significant structure makes it the ideal companion for elaborate dishes, roasted meats, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Castelnuovo Berardenga, specifically from the historic Poggio Rosso vineyard of San Felice. The rows, situated at around four hundred metres above sea level, are cultivated using Guyot and spur cordon methods on medium-textured soils rich in stones. The soil composition features calcareous-marl clays originating from Alberese and Galestro, resting on the Monte Morello formation, with some sandy areas of alluvial origin. This geological mosaic gives the wine a varied agronomic profile, ensuring an impeccable balance between aromatic intensity and structural finesse.
How it is produced
Production begins with fermentation in contact with the skins for twenty-five days, aimed at optimally extracting colour. After malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which preserves the fragrance of the primary aromas, the wine undergoes a long period of ageing in oak barrels and barriques for thirty-six months, followed by further rest in the bottle. The result is a broad aromatic bouquet where notes of plum, blackberry, sweet tobacco and spices stand out. On the palate, elegant hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee can be distinguished, completing a persistent and refined sip.
History and Curiosities
The renowned Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso originates from the vineyard of the same name located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the beating heart of the San Felice estate since 1968. Produced from clones selected at the end of the 1970s, this sumptuous red blends Sangiovese, Colorino and a touch of Pugnitello into a creation of rare elegance. Crafted for extraordinary longevity, the wine matures for 36 months between large oak casks and barriques and 15 months in the bottle. A true Tuscan gem that captivates with its silky tannins and enveloping notes of ripe fruit.
