Description
What kind of wine it is
Seggio, crafted by Poggio al Tesoro, is an elegant Tuscan wine originating from the Bolgheri Rosso area. This blend skilfully combines Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes in a medium-bodied profile. On the nose, it reveals aromas of fresh fruit, enhanced by delicate mineral and spicy nuances. The palate recalls juicy wild berries and is supported by enveloping silky tannins, leading to a clean and lively finish. Its marked gastronomic versatility makes it ideal for pairing with meats, pork-based dishes, game and cheeses. For optimal tasting, a one-hour decanting before serving is recommended.
Where it comes from
The wine takes its name from the Seggio, the main watercourse of Castagneto Carducci, which enriches the soils with alluvial debris and pebbles, ensuring excellent drainage. The grapes come from two renowned Tuscan vineyards: Via Bolgherese and Le Sondraie, both facing west and south-west. The former is characterised by deep red sandy soils, rich in stones and slightly sub-alkaline. The latter features clay soils and loose sands, with a high concentration of magnesium and iron. This geological synergy ensures the development of flourishing vines, giving the sip a harmonious balance and remarkable ageing potential.
How it is produced
After destemming and gentle pressing, vinification begins with fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature for twelve days. The subsequent malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in wood, promoting precise structural integration. The fifteen-month maturation in French oak barrels, divided between new and second-use wood, enhances the softness without masking the original fruity character. This meticulous process gives an intense ruby red colour and a balanced acid structure, resulting in a pleasant and smooth drink.
History and Curiosities
This elegant Bolgheri Rosso DOC pays tribute to the Seggio, the main watercourse of Castagneto Carducci. Its waters, originating from the metalliferous hills of Sassetta, enrich the clay soil with precious pebbles, ensuring perfect drainage for the vines. Founded in 2001, the Poggio al Tesoro winery masterfully combines sustainability and tradition to capture the essence of the region in every bottle, offering the palate a vibrant freshness and silky tannins of extraordinary smoothness.
