Description
Gattinara Valferana is a still red wine with an ancient tradition. It is produced in the province of Vercelli in the municipality of the same name, making it a DOCG red wine from the Piedmont region. Gattinara Valferana from the Nervi winery is made in the Valferana vineyard, originally called Val Florana, right below Monte Rosa. And it is precisely the proximity of such a high mountain that, combined with the magnificent exposure to the sun's rays, creates a microclimate where Nebbiolo grapes tend to thrive. In fact, Gattinara is made 100% from Nebbiolo grapes, which in this particular production area are called uva spanna. This is the production process for Gattinara Valferana carried out by the Piedmontese winery Nervi: it begins with destemming and gentle pressing, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks. After vinification, the wine ages for three years in large oak barrels, followed by further maturation in old concrete vats. A further 3-6 months in the bottle allows the product to reach the heights of quality renowned throughout Italy and beyond. Gattinara tastes best after around ten years, but the producer promises a much longer shelf life for its wine, naturally without losing its exceptional qualities.

Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia, also known as the greenest valley in Italy. The vineyards stretch across spectacular purple-hued slopes, due to the presence of quartz porphyry of volcanic origin, which gives the wines a distinct character compared to those from the Langhe or Roero regions.
One of the estate’s most iconic crus is Vigna Molsino, a natural amphitheater facing south, cradling the vines and allowing for slow, complete ripening. In this unique setting, the winery experienced a major turning point in 2018 with the arrival of Roberto Conterno—already renowned for his Barolo production at the Giacomo Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba. With the acquisition of Nervi and its 27 hectares of vineyards, Conterno chose to invest in the potential of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont, helping to elevate the prestige of Gattinara DOCG on an international scale.
