Description
What kind of wine it is
Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato Riserva is a still red wine produced by Montalbera, a structured and intense expression of this renowned Piedmontese excellence. Made from Ruché grapes, it appears in the glass with a ruby red colour tending towards garnet. Its sensory profile is distinguished by an enveloping bouquet of forest fruits and pomegranate, enriched by pronounced notes of oriental spices and black pepper. On the palate, it is warm and powerful, supported by well-integrated tannins that accompany a notably persistent finish.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Castagnole Monferrato, a prime area nestled among the Piedmontese hills. Here, Montalbera's vineyards take root in soils of varied nature, with a composition ranging from clay to limestone. The vines are trained using the low Guyot system on the hillsides, benefiting from optimal exposure. These unique soil and climate characteristics give the wine a solid taste profile, endowing the glass with a well-defined structure and a pronounced aromatic intensity.
How it is produced
The production process involves classic red vinification, designed to preserve the aromatic integrity of the grape variety. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for a period ranging from ten to fourteen months. The process continues with final maturation, where the wine rests horizontally at a controlled temperature. The decision to avoid tartaric stabilisation allows the natural expression of the wine to remain intact. This approach in the cellar ensures great taste balance and enhances the fullness of the drinking experience.
History and Curiosities
The Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG “Il Fondatore” celebrates the excellence of Montalbera, a historic winery located among the hills of Monferrato and the Langhe. Born from fine clay and limestone soils, this red wine expresses intense aromas of forest fruits and oriental spices. Careful vinification and expert ageing in French oak tonneaux for 10-14 months give it a warm, powerful and persistent structure, with perfectly integrated tannins. The decision not to carry out tartaric stabilisation allows the authenticity of the grape variety to be fully preserved.

In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.
A unique aspect that has always distinguished Montalbera in the Piedmontese winemaking landscape is that the winery sits astride two of the region’s most important winemaking zones: the Monferrato and the Langhe. Read more
