Description
Ruchè di Castagnole Laccento is a wine that has been designated DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato, in Piedmont. This grape is grown in the municipality of Castagnole Monferrato and some areas near Asti. The Montalbera farm, founded at the beginning of this century, extends across three different municipalities: Grana, Castagnole Monferrato, and Montemagno. The areas where the Montalbera winery has developed its activities are located in areas renowned for their winemaking activity, such as the Monferrato and Langhe regions. The Ruchè grapes used reach ripen between the end of September and the beginning of October, and one hundred percent of these grapes are used for the Ruchè di Castagnole Laccento. The training system is the low Guyot system, located on the sunniest hill with a southern exposure at an altitude of about 280 meters above sea level. The alcoholic fermentation is carried out with a portion of the grapes harvested when they are over-ripe and vinified with cold maceration. This occurs in the first few days following processing. Subsequently, a brief post-maceration is also carried out in a hot environment. The wine is exposed to the marc for 14 to 16 days. The post-fermentation phase lasts at least six to eight months in the bottle, which is placed in a horizontal position at a temperature no higher than ten degrees.

In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.
A unique aspect that has always distinguished Montalbera in the Piedmontese winemaking landscape is that the winery sits astride two of the region’s most important winemaking zones: the Monferrato and the Langhe. Read more
