Description
What kind of wine it is
Marena by Mamete Prevostini is a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of Nebbiolo, a grape variety locally known as Chiavennasca. As an expression of Valtellina Superiore Sassella, it stands out for its bright ruby red colour and a style of great elegance. On the nose, it releases a fine and intense bouquet, dominated by notes of morello cherry, hazelnut and small red fruits. On the palate, it reveals a velvety structure, resulting in a warm, harmonious wine with remarkable persistence on the palate, ideal for progressive evolution over time.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the municipalities of Castione and Sondrio, the result of heroic viticulture practised on the steep terraces of the area. The vineyards benefit from a southern exposure and are situated at an altitude between 350 and 550 metres, ensuring optimal ripening in a typically Alpine climate. The vines, trained using the Guyot system, sink their roots into sandy soil with little limestone, formed from weathered granite rocks with rare veins of clay. This particular geological composition gives the wine a distinctive character and a strong territorial identity.
How it is produced
The harvest begins in October with meticulous selection of the grape bunches. In the winery, a gentle destemming and soft pressing are carried out, followed by alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with thirteen days of maceration on the skins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for twelve months in oak barrels, a fundamental stage in defining its gustatory balance. The process concludes with bottle ageing for eight months before being released onto the market.
History and Curiosities
A product of heroic viticulture on the terraces of Valtellina Superiore Sassella, Marena by Mamete Prevostini tells a story rooted in 1928. This pure Nebbiolo owes its name to the local term for morello cherry, evoking its persistent fruity aroma. As a testament to its connection with its origins, the fragmented logo on the label symbolises the various vineyards of origin, celebrating the authenticity of the Valtellina terroir.

It is a territory whose streets over the centuries have been traversed by peoples and civilizations which over the decades have left a contribution very recognizable today through the traditions, the culture, the typical products.
Around the most important of these, the wine, has created a large community that still carries the same production processes then using what is universally recognized as one of the largest vineyards in the world, Nebbiolo (here called chiavennasca). the history of the winery began over seventy years ago when Mamete Prevostini begins, was the first post-war period, to produce wine from local grapes within the Crotto family, typical of Valchiavenna natural cavity formed in prehistoric times.
In 1988, however Mamete nephew, the current owner, took over the company's reins, and after a series of tests lasted about eight years signed his first real production in 1995, becoming within a decade a wine draft exceptional value. Today, all the wines are aged in a different way, according to unwritten rules but that are renewed year after year. Elegance, refinement, power for a great interpretation of Nebbiolo in Valtellina.
