Description

What kind of wine it is

Atis by Guado al Melo is a true expression of Bolgheri Superiore, a red wine that elegantly blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Rebo and Cabernet Franc varieties. The bouquet reveals intense notes of small black fruits and morello cherry, enriched by hints of liquorice, sweet tobacco, spices and menthol on a vanilla background. On the palate, it offers a full and enveloping body, well balanced by a pleasant freshness and soft tannins. The sip is harmonious and long-lasting, making it ideal for accompanying and enhancing flavourful dishes.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Castagneto Carducci, along the Tuscan coast, nestled on the slopes of the Segalari hills. The vineyards are set in a bright valley crossed by the Fossa di Bolgheri stream, enjoying a mild Mediterranean climate, dry and breezy. Constant sea breezes and significant summer temperature variations favour a slow and even ripening of the grapes. The roots delve into alluvial soils, deep and well-drained. This complex sandy-clay matrix, rich in pebbles, limestone and volcanic rock, ensures excellent balance for the vines, resulting in pronounced aromatic complexity in the glass.

How it is produced

Vinification follows an artisanal approach, working each micro-parcel separately to enhance the authentic nuances of the terroir. The grapes, destemmed and gently crushed, ferment with a maceration of about two weeks, accompanied by regular manual pump-overs. Maturation takes place over approximately twenty-four months in used barrels, where the wine develops further while resting on fine lees with weekly bâtonnage. The process involves natural decanting through racking, preserving the integrity of an unfiltered wine. After blending, the red wine refines in stainless steel before completing its journey with a long rest in the cellar.

History and Curiosities

This prestigious Bolgheri Superiore Atis celebrates its ancient Etruscan roots by paying homage to the eponymous mythological king, grandson of Zeus. The elegant label depicts the evocative married vine, an ancient cultivation method that has over time become the perfect symbol of eternal love. The excellent 2021 vintage boasts prestigious accolades such as the 3 Red Glasses Gambero Rosso, the 3 Gold Stars Veronelli and the 4 Vines from the Vitae AIS guide. To enhance the most special occasions, this majestic wine is available in large formats, up to the exclusive twelve-litre Balthazar.

The decision to plant a vineyard in this location was not made by chance but as a consequence of in-depth knowledge about its viticultural quality potential, thanks to its history and to the zonation studies carried out here in the 1990s.

Historical figures and documents report that these areas have been cultivated as vineyards at least since the mid-1800s. They were part of a great estate that with the 20th century was broken up, with the parcels passing from hand to hand until they arrived in our hands in 1998.

This passage of properties had left this particular parcel without a name. Examining historical maps, we discovered the toponym "Guado al Melo," or Ford at the Apple Tree, which was a ford across the Fossa di Bolgheri stream that forms the Northern boundary of our property. And thus Guado al Melo it became, testifying to our bond with the area. In 1999, we re-planted the vineyards, and in 2005 we completed the construction of the current wine cellar.
