Description

What kind of spirit is this

Amaro Stomatica by Foletto is a complex herbal digestif crafted in Trentino-South Tyrol from medicinal Alpine botanicals via artisanal maceration. It offers an intense, herbaceous profile with a long, balanced finish. The palate is defined by bold tannic notes of rhubarb and gentian, which provide a clear and pleasant bitterness. With an alcohol content of 32%, this liqueur is equally enjoyable when sipped neat after a meal or used as a versatile cocktail ingredient.

Origin

Hailing from Trentino-South Tyrol, this liqueur is a testament to the region’s historical apothecary traditions. The original recipe was created in 1898 by botanist Angelo Foletto, continuing a distilling legacy that dates back to 1850. Through the selection of specific Alpine botanicals, the amaro achieves its signature, firm bitterness. Its effectiveness was such that the tincture was officially recognised as a pharmaceutical speciality and prescribed throughout Europe until 1990.

Production

Foletto Amaro Stomatica is produced via an artisanal hydroalcoholic infusion of officinal herbs. The botanicals undergo a painstaking 24-month maceration, an extended extraction process that develops complexity and strengthens the rhubarb and gentian core. To ensure absolute consistency, production is limited to small 450-litre batches. This meticulous approach results in a concentrated liqueur with a lasting bitterness, offering a refined intensity perfect for sipping neat or mixing in sophisticated cocktails.

The Foletto distillery is located in a small valley in Trentino above Lake Garda, precisely in Pieve di Ledro in the province of Trento.

The distillery has an ancient tradition combined with a passion for liqueurs, herbs and innovation. The Foletto family has passed on this passion and care over time, ensuring that syrups and liqueurs are produced with the same care and professionalism as centuries ago.

The history of the Foletto family is certainly a captivating one: starting out as a pharmacy and pharmaceutical laboratory, the Foletto family began to expand their business into the production of liqueurs and syrups in the late 1800s.

The Foletto pharmacists have handed down from father to son this passion for truly artisanal things, continuing to produce syrups and liqueurs today with the same care and professionalism that they have done for centuries.

A small exhibition of the equipment used in the early 1900s has been open to the public since 2000 (renovated in August 2011 to include the old premises and furniture of the pharmacy, the original furnishings of which date back about 125 years).
