Description

What kind of spirit is this?

Finlaggan by The Vintage Malt Whisky Company is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky crafted from water, yeast, and malted barley. Bottled at 40% ABV, it offers a fruity, delicately peated profile with an elegant, balanced smokiness. The nose reveals distinct peat aromas alongside medicinal and coastal notes, evolving into scents of honey, biscuit, and chocolate, while on the palate, this full-bodied spirit showcases a structured core of sweet cereals enriched by warming ginger and nutmeg. The experience concludes with a long, inviting finish defined by a gently smoky character.

Where does it come from?

Hailing from Islay off Scotland’s west coast, this spirit is deeply influenced by its rugged coastal environment. The island climate imparts notes of sea air, salinity, and a distinct maritime freshness alongside its signature peat. The whisky is carefully selected by the Vintage Malt Whisky Company, an independent bottler dedicated to authentic Scottish malts. While proudly displaying its heritage, the exact source remains a secret, as it is bottled from an undisclosed Islay distillery. This deliberate anonymity adds an air of mystery, allowing the focus to remain purely on the island’s unique regional characteristics.

How is it produced?

Production begins with a meticulously prepared malted barley mash, fermented and distilled to create this distinctive spirit. The bottler selects premium casks to ensure the final whisky reflects authentic Scottish methods. Maturation takes place over 6 years in a combination of ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks. This ageing process develops a rounder structure while keeping the prominent peat clearly defined. Interaction with the wood imparts depth, seamlessly integrating complex nuances of spice and chocolate to achieve a balanced aromatic profile and a persistent finish.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1992 by Brian Cook, The Vintage Malt Whisky Company champions traditional Scottish malts. Their hallmark release, Finlaggan Old Reserve, is an intriguing Islay single malt shrouded in mystery. While its island origins are proudly declared, the exact distillery remains a closely guarded secret, sparking endless speculation among enthusiasts who suspect legendary producers such as Laphroaig or Lagavulin. Bottled independently in small batches, this Islay single malt beautifully showcases the rich heritage of Scotland’s iconic whisky region.

With the aim of creating a selection of Scottish malt whiskey products in the best distilleries on the island, in 1992, Mr. Brian Crook founded the "The Vintage Malt Whiskey Company" - VMWC, whereby all the world's importers can easily find the most prestigious Scottish distillers, in order to redistribute them for retail. While over a century ago there were more than 120 distilleries in Scotland, most of them family-run, at present, only 17 or 18 distilleries still produce malt whiskey following traditional processes, and these are very family-owned. The remaining distilleries are, in fact, controlled by multinational companies. In this scenario, the VMWC takes on the role of being the guarantor of small family-run distilleries, which produce, if desired, the most original and authentic Scots Whiskeys. This approach has led the VMWC to expand its market by exporting up to one million and two hundred thousand Whiskey bottles in 20 countries and making the world's rarest and most sought-after Scottish whiskey known.
