Description

What kind of wine it is

Catarratto Masso is an organic white wine produced by Feudo Montoni, an authentic expression of the Catarratto Bianco Comune grape variety. Originating from Terre Siciliane, it stands out visually for its yellow colour enlivened by bright greenish reflections. The aromatic profile opens with clear citrus notes of lumia, elegantly integrated with delicate hints of bay leaf and mint. On the palate, it offers a sip with energetic character, supported by pronounced acidity and balanced mineral savouriness, characteristics enhanced by fermentation and ageing in cement.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Cammarata area, at about seven hundred metres above sea level, where they benefit from a breezy eastern exposure. The name of the cru derives directly from the peculiar composition of the soil, characterised by a ferrous sandy rock that imparts a deep savoury imprint to the glass. The vineyards are cultivated using the traditional alberello system and consist of old vines over fifty years old, whose roots delve into a mountainous environment ideal for promoting slow and regular ripening. Feudo Montoni tends these historic plots, preserving the agricultural identity and specific geological features of the area of origin.

How it is produced

The process begins with a manual harvest, a fundamental step to preserve the integrity of the bunches until they reach the winery. The process continues with fermentation in cement vats, accompanied by maceration on the skins that lasts for part of the fermentation phase. This targeted technique enriches the structure and amplifies the aromatic spectrum. Finally, the wine rests in the same containers for sur lie ageing lasting six months; during this phase, constant bâtonnage gives depth and texture to the sip, enhancing the varietal purity without altering its natural freshness.

History and Curiosities

The Masso cru owes its name to the ferrous sandy rock that gives the wine an elegant minerality. Produced by a historic winery founded in 1469, this pure organic Catarratto comes from bush-trained vines grown at an altitude of 700 metres in Cammarata. The old vines from which this cru is made boast an age of 55 years, bearing witness to the long agricultural tradition preserved over time.

The history of Feudo Montoni began in Sicily under Catalan rule by the Aragonese, with the construction of the original Baglio by the Abatellis family. In those same cellars, the varieties described by Andrea Bacci in his De Naturali Vinorum Historia in 1595 are still vinified today.

At the end of the 19th century, the estate passed into the hands of the Sireci family, in the person of Rosario, the grandfather of the current owner Fabio. With Fabio, this continuous evolution continues in the name of the most rigorous integration with nature, so much so that, since 2013, the entire production has been certified organic.

The company's philosophy is based on the use of natural forces for wine production: "gravity" as a means of transport, "time" as a refiner, winter and the "mountains" as a refrigerator.
