Description
What kind of wine it is
Bolgheri Rosso Superiore Le Gonnare by Fabio Motta is a still red wine from Tuscany, made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour, which hints at a bold aromatic profile characterised by notes of wilted roses, myrtle berries and hints of marine undergrowth, enriched with nuances of liquorice and a balsamic background. On the palate, the sip is full and enveloping, with a natural warmth balanced by freshness and well-integrated tannins, leading to a persistent finish. Its substantial structure makes it ideal for pairing with hare stew, red meats, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This blend originates in Bolgheri, in the territory of Castagneto Carducci, from a small vineyard managed according to a strict organic approach. The rows are situated one hundred and fifty metres above sea level, with a north and north-west exposure. Here, the Mediterranean climate meets a distinctive sandy-clay soil, rich in stones and pebbles. This geological composition encourages a very gradual ripening of the grapes, a fundamental element in defining the structure and aromatic concentration of the fruit, ensuring balance and remarkable persistence on the palate.
How it is produced
The grapes are harvested, destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts in unlined concrete vats, with carefully timed maceration to extract a balanced tannic structure. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine matures for about eighteen months in lightly toasted oak barrels, developing an elegant complexity. After careful filtration, the wine is aged for at least a year in the cellar before reaching its full structural expressiveness.
History and Curiosities
Born in 2012 from the acquisition of a small, outstanding vineyard by Fabio Motta, this Bolgheri Rosso Superiore perfectly expresses a unique terroir. Situated at 150 metres above sea level, the clay-rich, stony soil encourages a gradual ripening of the grapes. Fermented with indigenous yeasts according to a strict organic and sustainable philosophy, the wine exudes an authentic Mediterranean charm, characterised by perfect balance. The exceptional quality of the 2022 vintage is crowned by an excellent score of 94/100 from James Suckling.

The vines stretch over about 4 hectares of land with excellent soil. Shortly after beginning I purchased another two-hectare vineyard that produces top-quality white grapes, (mostly Vermentino) in the "Le Fornacelle" area. Read more
