Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Riserva Rüncot® by Elio Grasso is a red wine that interprets the Nebbiolo grape variety with utmost precision. Characterised by a garnet red colour, on the nose it reveals marked complexity where cherry jam and plum stand out, accompanied by hints of tobacco, liquorice and delicate ethereal notes. On the palate, it expresses elegance and vigour, supported by a noble and silky tannin. The sip finishes with a persistent finish, making it ideal for pairing with structured dishes of game, beef or mature cheeses, preferably after decanting.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Barolo region, from vineyards around thirty years old cultivated using the Guyot method. The vineyards benefit from optimal southern exposure and are situated at an altitude between 300 and 350 metres. The soil, composed of calcareous-clay of medium texture, is fundamental in giving the wine its precise tannic structure. This balance of soil and climate gives the profile a pronounced aromatic intensity and an exceptional capacity for ageing over time.

How it is produced

Production begins with manual harvesting, usually carried out in the second half of October. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with daily pump-overs to extract colour and structure. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine matures in French oak barrels. The process is completed with a long rest in the cellar for about 18-24 months, a crucial phase to achieve perfect balance of flavour before being released to the market.

History and Curiosities

The Barolo DOCG Riserva Rüncot® by Elio Grasso originates in Monforte d’Alba from Nebbiolo vines around thirty years old, cultivated on particularly suitable calcareous-clay soils. The grapes, hand-picked in October, give rise to a true masterpiece, awarded an impressive 98 points by James Suckling. After careful fermentation, the wine matures elegantly in French oak barriques and then rests in the cellar for 18-24 months. This skilful artisanal care gives the wine a vigorous sip, enhanced by a noble and fine tannin and a long, persistent finish.

The vineyards owned by the Grasso family are the estate’s greatest assets. The area where they are located has always been considered outstanding wine country, as is demonstrated by the inclusion of our holdings in the map of the finest vineyards drawn up by the great historian, Lorenzo Fantini, in the early 20th century.

In the early 1980s we decided to go back to our origins as grape growers, well aware that our work did not stop at the end of the row of vines. We had no illusions that we were inventing anything: we merely wanted to comply with the best in the traditions and work of our predecessors, without any preconceived ideas. The first logical consequence was the decision, from 1978, to vinify and bottle separately grapes from our various vineyards.
