Description

What kind of wine it is

Colpetrone Sagrantino di Montefalco Memoira is a still red wine that vigorously expresses the character of the Sagrantino grape variety. This Umbrian interpretation of Sagrantino di Montefalco presents itself with a deep, dark ruby red colour. On the nose, it offers a broad aromatic profile, defined by intense notes of red fruit and spices, enriched by a very fine touch of vanilla. On the palate, it reveals a powerful and compact structure, supported by a marked tannic concentration that is capable of evolving elegantly over time.

Where it comes from

This profound red originates in the heart of Umbria, specifically in Gualdo Cattaneo, an area historically renowned for the production of Sagrantino di Montefalco. The Colpetrone winery cultivates the Sagrantino grape with great care for the unique characteristics of the land. The name of the wine evokes a refined linguistic interplay, combining the Italian word memoria with the Greek moira and the French mémoire. This origin gives the wine a pronounced territorial identity, capable of reflecting the character of a unique hilly landscape through a distinctive flavour profile.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with fermentation at a controlled temperature, accompanied by daily pump-overs and délestage. At the end of this phase, a prolonged maceration is carried out, slightly increasing the temperature to encourage optimal extraction of colour and tannins. After racking, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for twelve months, followed by a further six months of bottle ageing. Before tasting, it is recommended to decant the wine for about an hour, making it ideal to elegantly accompany flavourful first courses, roast red meats, game, and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

The name Memoira is born from a refined blend of the Italian “Memoria”, the Greek “Moira”, and the French “Mémoire”, creating an evocative and internationally inspired union. Produced in Umbria by the winery Colpetrone, an outstanding establishment founded in 1995 in Gualdo Cattaneo, this fine Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG embodies the expertise of oenologists Riccardo Cotarella and Emanuele Nardi. The exceptional 2017 vintage was awarded 92 points by James Suckling and Vinous, confirming the international prestige and undisputed quality of this powerful red.

Còlpetrone became a member of the group in 1995 and is situated exactly in the centre of Umbria, a stone's throw from Foligno, Trevi and Bastardo. In a few years it became one of the key farms in the area of Montefalco, due to its spectacular red wine, Sagrantino of Montefalco. In a few years time this farm, practically unknown, has conquered the honour of the press through a series of national and international awards. The most important period of Sagrantino, started immediately after its vigorous entrance of production, the D.O.C.G. certification did the rest. To such an extent that Còlpetrone is actually one of the most popular in the entire region of Umbria.

Next to Sagrantino we propose Montefalco Rosso and in a few years there will also be a sensational version of Sagrantino Passito, a sweet red wine with along history that has become a true "speciality of the house". In the course of the year 2001 the investments have been increased with the acquisition of other portions of land that border Còlpetrone that will be put into use with the objective to grow steadily in quality. The present 45 acres of vineyard will become, within the year 2005, 111 to grow again to 148 within the year 2007. That makes Còlpetrone one of the more important holdings in Montefalco.
