Description
What kind of wine it is
Montefalco Sagrantino O di Colpetrone is a still red wine that faithfully embodies the oenological character of Umbria. Made exclusively from Sagrantino grapes, it reveals itself in the glass with a deep ruby red colour, enhanced by elegant garnet reflections. The bouquet is enveloping, characterised by pronounced spicy notes and intense aromas of red fruit jam. On the palate, it displays a dense and powerful structure, offering long persistence and remarkable ageing potential. To enhance its complexity, it pairs ideally with roast red meats, game, and mature cheeses, expressing itself best after adequate aeration.
Where it comes from
The production of this label originates in Gualdo Cattaneo, in the vibrant heart of Umbria. The Colpetrone winery has for years highlighted the excellent qualities of Montefalco Sagrantino, making it the flagship grape of its production. The vineyards are located in a specific area between Foligno, Trevi, and Bastardo, a privileged pedoclimatic context for the ripening of the grapes. This territory gives the wine a strong territorial identity, ensuring extraordinary expressive concentration and laying the foundations for pronounced longevity.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place towards the end of September, followed by temperature-controlled maceration with constant daily pump-overs. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the temperature is increased for a few days to encourage optimal polyphenolic extraction before racking. The wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels, where it acquires depth and aromatic complexity. This is followed by a further final ageing period of 6 months, an essential phase to perfectly harmonise all the structural components of the wine before serving.

Next to Sagrantino we propose Montefalco Rosso and in a few years there will also be a sensational version of Sagrantino Passito, a sweet red wine with along history that has become a true "speciality of the house". In the course of the year 2001 the investments have been increased with the acquisition of other portions of land that border Còlpetrone that will be put into use with the objective to grow steadily in quality. The present 45 acres of vineyard will become, within the year 2005, 111 to grow again to 148 within the year 2007. That makes Còlpetrone one of the more important holdings in Montefalco. Read more
