Description
What type of wine it is
Ferruggini by Chiappini is an organic red wine with a Controlled Designation of Origin that captures the essence of Bolgheri Rosso in Tuscany. Fermented in steel and aged in barrels, this blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is distinguished by a smooth sip, characterised by a medium body and a velvety texture. The aromatic profile reveals clear notes of red fruits, enriched by nuances of black tea, orange peel and Mediterranean scrub herbs. Its balanced structure makes it the perfect companion for Tuscan cuisine specialities.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown along the Tuscan coast in the Bolgheri territory, in the historic Felciaino and Fondi vineyards. Here the vines grow on alluvial-based soils, formed of sand, silt, clay and limestone sediments. The presence of gravelly deposits ensures ideal drainage, giving precision and finesse to the fruit. Chiappini adopts rigorous organic management, preserving the fertility of the land through natural practices such as green manuring and organic fertilisation.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place in the first half of September, gathering the bunches at the correct degree of ripeness. The must ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with the aid of only indigenous yeasts, respecting the authentic character of the grape varieties. The wine then matures for twelve months, resting mainly in steel and completing its refinement in French oak barrels. This meticulous process preserves the freshness and expressive precision that distinguish this wine.
History and Fascinating Facts
Ferruggini embodies the passion of the Chiappini family, who have been active in Bolgheri since the 1950s. Founded in 1978, the estate cultivates fifteen hectares of historic vineyards planted between 1984 and 2001, following rigorous organic management since 2010. Under the guidance of oenologist Emiliano Falsini, this limited production of twenty thousand bottles per year carries forward an excellence established in 2004 and recognised by Bibenda, Decanter, and Gambero Rosso.

In the 50s, Bolgheri was very far from the combination of wine and quality which characterizes it today. Back then, vegetables gardens, fruit trees and olive trees shared the scenery with vineyards, united by a mainly domestic consumption. The Bolgheri area was a land of farmers, tourism was not to be witnessed yet, the work was tiring and yet the farmer culture was dominant, together with its natural principles and the sense of commonality which allowed the integration among the different communities which found themselves living here, attracted by the great availability of land to work.
Today the enterprise occupies 27 hectares of land, 15 of which are filled with vineyards which allow an average yearly production of approximately 80'000 bottles. The varieties which are currently grown are the ones that are typical of the area: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, and a small amount of sangiovese and vermentino.
From the vintage of 2010 we have started the entirely organic production within the farm, the vineyards and the olive groves are therefore defended through copper and sulfur and the vineyards are worked by using green manure and organic fertilization, in the respect of the territory, of the environment and of the farmers. The desire to grow goes hand in hand with the quest for quality and for the respect of values, in the name of a unique terroir like the Bolgheri one. Read more
