Description
What kind of wine it is
Côte de Brouilly La Chapelle from Château Thivin is a still red wine made from Gamay Noir grapes, originating from the Côte de Brouilly area in Beaujolais. On the nose, it releases clear aromas of wild strawberries, blueberries and violets, followed by spicy nuances. On the palate, it reveals a taut and vibrant structure, supported by compact tannins and a pronounced volcanic minerality that imparts a pleasant salinity to the persistent finish. If allowed to breathe for about an hour, it pairs perfectly with Lyonnaise cuisine and poultry dishes.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow at the top of Mont Brouilly, in a south-facing plot with steep slopes. The dry, rocky soil is composed of metamorphic blue diorite, a geological formation that gives the wine its characteristic savoury imprint. The Gamay Noir vines, with an average age of sixty years, are cultivated using the gobelet training system and are planted at high density. Vineyard management promotes biodiversity through grassing and the sowing of floral species, practices that preserve the natural balance and vitality of the soil.
How it is produced
Harvesting is done by hand to ensure maximum integrity of the bunches. In the winery, whole bunch fermentation or partial destemming is followed by a maceration of about fifteen days, for optimal extraction of phenolic and aromatic components. The wine then matures in oak barrels until the beginning of the following summer. This ageing process smooths the tannic texture and ensures great ageing potential, preserving the freshness of the Gamay Noir and the mineral energy typical of its terroir of origin.
History and Curiosities
The Côte de Brouilly “La Chapelle” 2023 from Château Thivin comes from sixty-year-old vines located at the summit of Mont Brouilly. This elegant Gamay Noir draws its vigour from the steep slopes and a distinctive volcanic soil of blue diorite. In the glass, it releases vibrant aromas of red fruits combined with a pronounced minerality, offering a memorable tasting experience, awarded a score of 95 by James Suckling.

On 8th June 1877, Zaccharie and Marguerite Geoffray acquired Château Thivin and the two hectares of vineyards surrounding the estate (Le Clos).
Each subsequent generation would contribute new plots of land to the estate and develop the cultivation and winemaking methods. Today, the fifth and sixth generations of the Geoffray family run this small family business, work the estate's vineyards and vinify each wine, respecting the terroir of origin as the seasons change.
Today, Claude Vincent is happy and proud to take his three grandchildren, Tobias, Nicolas and Florina, into the vineyards and cellar to initiate them into the secrets of the trade and give them a taste of working the land. Read more
