Description

What kind of wine it is

Barco Reale di Carmignano by Capezzana is an elegant organic Tuscan red wine. This harmonious blend of grape varieties combines Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Canaiolo Nero, presenting itself with a deep, intense ruby colour. On the nose, it reveals broad aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by notes of Mediterranean herbs, lavender, hibiscus and subtle hints of oak. On the palate, it offers an enveloping volume and a velvety structure, where sweet tannins are perfectly integrated with lively acidity. The long, fruity finish is ideal for pairing with flavourful first courses, grilled red meats, game or mature cheeses with an intense taste.

Where it comes from

It originates in the Carmignano area, taking its name from the ancient Medici reserve historically protected by the wall of the Barco Reale. The vines benefit from bright southern exposures that ensure excellent ripening of the grapes. The local climate, marked by hot summer days and cool nights, enhances a perfect aromatic definition. The vineyards are rooted in clay, schist and limestone soils, essential elements that give the wine a balanced tannic texture and clear fruit. Cultivation follows strict sustainable and organic farming practices, safeguarding the richness of the land and the fullest varietal expression.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a targeted mechanical harvest: Sangiovese is picked in September, followed by the Cabernet grapes in October. Fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperature, supported by eight days of maceration on the skins, ensures excellent extraction of colour and aromas. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine matures for twelve months in Allier oak barrels, gaining complexity and roundness. The entire winemaking cycle concludes with a carefully measured final ageing of three months, a crucial step to harmonise all components before tasting.

History and Curiosities

The origins of Tenuta Capezzana date back to the year 804, intertwining over the centuries with noble dynasties until reaching the current owners, the Contini Bonacossi family. This fascinating label celebrates the ancient Medici reserve, once protected by the monumental wall of the Barco Reale. A perfect youthful expression of Carmignano DOC, this organic red wine harmonises Sangiovese, Cabernet and Canaiolo in a sublime sip. The prestigious historical heritage is reflected in a velvety structure and a lively fruity freshness, offering an authentic and memorable Tuscan tasting experience.

Tenuta di Capezzana is an ancient tradition of the Carmignanese company. Carmignano is one of the oldest towns in Tuscany and the history and fame of its wines are linked to the millennial events of this land.

The vine was already cultivated in Etruscan times, about 3,000 years ago, as shown by the wine containers found among the numerous finds. Then came the Roman era: it was written that the same names of some wineries would derive from Roman names of the era of Silla, when the area was divided and given to veterans; Capezzana would take the name of one of these, Capitus.

In the Florence state archives we found a parchment dated 804: it is a lease contract which documents how already 1200 years ago in Capezzana oil and wine were produced. In the 20s of the last century the Contini Bonacossi family bought Capezzana. Currently the management of the company belongs to Count Ugo's sons, who have divided the tasks in the company: Benedetta works in the cellar in close contact with Vittorio, who also takes care of the wine sector together with his son Gaddo; Filippo takes care of the production of oil and the financial part and Beatrice is the commercial and marketing manager of the company, assisted by her niece Serena. Currently the company has a total area of 670 hectares, of which over 90 are vineyards and 140 are olive groves.

Capezzana is located in the north of Tuscany, in the municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, 20 km from Florence, between the Montalbano and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. This explains the particularity of its microclimate: in summer the days are hot and followed by cool nights and the rainfall is well distributed throughout the year.
