Description
What kind of wine it is
Baia al Vento is a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of Bolgheri Superiore, crafted by the winery Campo al Mare. This structured blend combines the varieties Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, presenting an intense ruby red colour with violet highlights. On the nose, it reveals an enveloping profile, dominated by notes of ripe red fruit and balsamic hints. On the palate, it is warm, powerful and silky in texture, supported by soft and elegant tannins that lead to a harmonious and persistent finish.
Where it comes from
This intense Tuscan red originates from the vineyards of Castagneto Carducci, located a short distance from the sea. The typical coastal Mediterranean climate profoundly influences the ripening of the grapes, giving the wine an aromatic vein reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub. The territorial identity translates into a significant structure, capable of evolving elegantly over time. At the table, its smooth texture is enhanced when paired with game and stews, and it also accompanies mature cheeses and structured dishes such as Livornese-style fish soup superbly.
How it is produced
Production begins with the harvesting of Merlot in the first half of September, followed by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the winery, the grapes undergo skin maceration at a controlled temperature to extract colour and structural components. After malolactic fermentation in steel tanks, the wine matures in French oak barrels for about twelve months, during which it acquires roundness and complexity. Ageing is completed in the bottle, an essential step to consolidate the enveloping structure before tasting.
History and Curiosities
Produced in Castagneto Carducci, just a stone's throw from the sea, Baia al Vento Bolgheri Superiore 2022 represents the excellence of Tenuta Campo al Mare, owned by the Folonari family. This refined blend, predominantly Merlot, captures the essence of the coastal Mediterranean climate, maturing for twelve months in French oak tonneaux and completing its ageing in the bottle to achieve an enveloping and silky texture. Awarded 94 points by James Suckling and 91 points by Decanter, this red wine enhances every special occasion.

In 1912, Italo Folonari, Ambrogio Folonari's grandfather, with his brother Francesco, bought the Ruffino winery, known at the time for its characteristically flask-packed Chianti.
After the Second World War, some profound changes took place in Italy in terms of economic development and rising living standards. This trend also influenced the wine sector, where the Folonari family, and Ambrogio in particular, were among the first to promote this trend by producing new, high-quality wines that helped create the 'new frontier' of Italian wine. At the end of the 1960s, the family sold the company 'Fratelli Folonari', which was positioned in the table wine segment, and began to concentrate on bottled wines at origin, thanks also to the acquisition of the famous Tenuta di Nozzole near Greve in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico region. At the same time, they bought other estates in Tuscany with the aim of producing fine wines, including 'Cabreo' conceived by Ambrogio in the 1980s.
In 2000, Ambrogio left Ruffino and the rest of the family and created with his son the: "Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute", holding some of the best agricultural properties. This gave rise to a group of companies located in areas with the highest wine-growing vocation in Tuscany. Read more
