Description
What kind of wine it is
Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Fontanelle is an enveloping organic still red wine, an authentic expression of Aglianico grapes cultivated by the Basilisco winery. Originating from the prestigious Aglianico del Vulture Superiore area, it combines structural fullness with a clear and profound flavour profile. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red hue, heralding a bouquet dominated by freshly ripened small black and red fruits, interwoven with refined hints of cinnamon and incense. On the palate, it reveals a rich character on impact and a subtle finish, where distinct notes of sweet spices and liquorice linger.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow in Barile, in the heart of Basilicata, on deep volcanic soils. The vineyards thrive at around five hundred metres above sea level with a south and south-east exposure, ensuring ideal ripening of the bunches. This unique habitat shapes an intense style, capable of blending natural material concentration with great aromatic clarity. Under the care of oenologist Viviana Malafarina, the estate follows the principles of sustainable organic farming, tending the vines trained with the Guyot trellis system to deliver a faithful and harmonious expression of the native landscape.
How it is produced
The vinification process begins in steel tanks, where the must ferments and macerates in contact with the skins for about twenty-five days. This delicate phase ensures optimal extraction of colour and the finest structural components. Subsequently, the wine matures for twelve months in French oak barrels, an essential step to integrate and soften the tannic texture, shaping a spicy profile that elegantly lingers on the finish. Designed for remarkable evolution over time, it offers its best expression if decanted for an hour before serving.
History and Curiosities
Born from the volcanic soils of Barile, Fontanelle 2017 is a prestigious Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG produced by the Basilisco winery. Under the expert guidance of oenologist Viviana Malafarina, this intense organic red expresses the authentic soul of Basilicata. After macerating for around 25 days in steel, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques, acquiring extraordinary elegance. Such artisanal care has been widely recognised by critics, receiving an impressive 94 points from Vinous and 92 points from James Suckling.

In 2011, Feudi di San Gregorio, the leading winery in the South of Italy and present in the Vulture region for over 10 years, decided to start a project reclaiming its ancient tuff stone caves in the "Shesh", the historic Park of the Barile cellars, relaunching with conviction the bet made on this area of exceptional viticultural value, culminating in the acquisition of the nearby Basilisco.
With its splendid tufa cellars and vineyards in the area's most suitable districts, Basilisco completed this project. The result is a space of enchanting beauty in the historic heart of Aglianico del Vulture.
The face and soul of Basilisco is Viviana Malafarina, who runs the company and is personally and passionately involved in the winery operations, under the expert guidance of Pierpaolo Sirch, who is also responsible for vineyard management.
