Description
What kind of wine it is
Sassella Stella Retica by Ar.Pe.Pe is a red wine with a garnet colour that expresses the elegance of Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex, characterised by intense notes of red roses, wild berries, cedarwood, bay leaf and light-leaf tobacco. On the palate, it is taut and savoury, supported by a crystalline freshness and a firm tannin, perfectly balanced by a seductive softness. This combination gives the wine austerity and an extraordinary ability to evolve over time.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the terraces of Valtellina Superiore Sassella, a striking mountain setting nestled among the Rhaetian Alps in Lombardy. Ar.Pe.Pe enhances the micro-variability of each plot through meticulous agronomic management and the search for the ideal harvest time. The extreme soil and climate conditions give the fruit a unique character. The wine's name pays homage to the edelweiss and a historic local climbing route, reflecting the vertical spirit and rocky nature of this slope.
How it is produced
Vinification involves a prolonged maceration of 102 days in wooden vats, aimed at gently extracting structure and complexity. Ageing continues for fifteen months in wooden barrels and concrete tanks, finishing with a period of rest in the bottle. This rigorous approach smooths the tannic texture and enhances the nuances of the grape variety, ensuring a solid structural balance on the palate where acidity and roundness blend harmoniously.
History and Curiosities
The Sassella Stella Retica 2022 by Ar.Pe.Pe takes its name from the rare alpine star and the historic “climbs” among the vineyards of the Rhaetian Alps. Made from Nebbiolo Chiavennasca grapes and awarded 3 Red Glasses, it is the result of a 102-day maceration in wood. After a meticulous fifteen-month ageing process, the glass reveals intense notes of red rose, cedar and tobacco. On the palate, it offers an austere and enveloping experience, where firm tannins meet a crystalline freshness, ensuring perfect balance and a surprising ability to evolve over time.
