Description

What kind of wine it is

Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Sauvignon is a still red wine from South Africa, an authentic expression of the Coastal Region. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, this red stands out for its intriguing bouquet, where notes of blackcurrant leaf and cassis blend with hints of violet and cocoa powder. On the palate, it is dry and juicy, with an enveloping structure recalling flavours of blackberry, cherry and cedar spice. The pleasant acidity is supported by a well-balanced texture, making it ideal to pair with rich game dishes and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This Cabernet Sauvignon originates from the historic L’Ormarins estate, located at the foot of the Groot Drakenstein mountains in the Franschhoek area. The vineyards are rooted in decomposed granite soils, a key feature that gives the wine a clear aromatic profile and structured character. The unique terroir of the Western Cape encourages balanced ripening of the grapes, ensuring a sip of great finesse. Careful vineyard management enhances the quality of the fruit, resulting in a South African red that stands out for its elegance and intensity.

How it is produced

The grapes are hand-harvested to select the best bunches, which are transported at controlled temperatures to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After optical selection, the berries are transferred by gravity into vats for a brief cold maceration. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in wooden tanks thanks to indigenous yeasts, faithfully respecting the character of the must. Ageing continues for twenty-four months in new French oak barrels, enriching the wine with delicate spicy notes, followed by a further period in bottle that defines its mature and enveloping character.

History and Curiosities

Born at the foot of the Groot Drakenstein mountains, on the historic L’Ormarins estate, this 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon enhances a winemaking heritage dating back to 1694. The label celebrates the vision of Anthonij Rupert: to create outstanding South African wines of the highest calibre. The grapes, hand-picked into crates and carefully chilled, undergo a slow spontaneous fermentation in wood with indigenous yeasts, preserving the integrity and aromatic purity of the fruit. This meticulous artisanal care earned the wine 91 points from James Suckling, offering an authentic and elegant sip.
