Description

What kind of wine it is

The Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a still red wine from California, an authentic expression of the Pinot Noir grape variety. It stands out for its balanced profile, where the fruity component blends harmoniously with a natural freshness. The aromatic bouquet reveals clear notes of dried flowers, mint, dried cherries and resinous hints of pine. On the palate, it offers a pleasant mid-palate density, maintaining an elegant texture that leads to a clean and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Sonoma Coast area, located within the larger Sonoma Valley in California. The vineyards are situated in areas most exposed to ocean currents, between western Sebastopol, the Petaluma Gap and the northern coastal ridges. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean ensures a cool, maritime climate, with constant breezes that favour slow ripening. These soil and climate conditions give the wine a vibrant acidic tension, well-defined aromas and an extremely smooth drinkability.

How it is produced

The Anthill Farms winery adopts a rigorous artisan approach to enhance the identity of its place of origin. After harvesting, the grapes are processed with a focus on extractive finesse to ensure a silky structure and excellent ageing potential. To fully appreciate its complex aromatic range, it is recommended to decant for about an hour and serve at a temperature between 18 and 20°C. It pairs beautifully with game dishes, pork-based preparations and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded in Healdsburg in 2004, Anthill Farms winery produces this artisan Pinot Noir by showcasing the authentic Californian terroir. The grapes grow in the cool coastal areas west of Sebastopol and along the edges of the Petaluma Gap, where breezes from the Pacific Ocean ensure a slow ripening until October. This rigorous approach gives the wine impeccable elegance, rewarded with 90 points by James Suckling and Vinous. Thanks to an excellent ageing potential of 10-15 years, this label best expresses the Sonoma Coast.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 2004
The three of us met while working at Williams-Selyem in 2003. We started Anthill Farms in 2004, producing eight and a half barrels of wine our first year.

Today, we make eight single-vineyard Pinots and two appellation wines every year; depending on the vintage, we’ll also produce two or three Syrahs and a Chardonnay. We release the Sonoma County Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay to our mailing list members in Spring; fall sees the Mendocino County and Syrah offering. Outside of our mailing list, a small amount of wine is released every year to restaurants and wine shops.

We started small and have remained so; the best way to find our wines is through our mailing list, which can be accessed here. Unfortunately we are not available to accommodate visits to the winery outside of our scheduled pickup days.
