Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Cerretta Vigna Bricco Riserva by Elio Altare expresses the essence of Nebbiolo grown in Serralunga d’Alba. It presents a lively ruby red colour, enriched with bright garnet highlights, and reveals a broad bouquet ranging from spices, liquorice and tobacco, to fresh balsamic and menthol notes. The palate is enveloping, supported by powerful and structured tannins that define a profile of great character. It pairs magnificently with intense dishes such as beef, lamb, game, traditional cured meats and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This prestigious red originates from the Cerretta vineyard, where the vines sink their roots into soils rich in clay-limestone marl. This geological composition imparts vigour and a solid structure to the grapes, making them ideal for a Riserva version. The approach in the vineyard is focused on respecting the land and minimal intervention, in order to enhance the authentic expression of the territory. The mention Vigna Bricco highlights the value of the specific plot, defining a production style deeply linked to the identity of the place.

How it is produced

The cellar process involves a short maceration on the skins in a rotofermenter at controlled temperature for four or five days, to extract colour and aromas in a balanced way. This is followed by twenty-four months of ageing in French barrels, partly new, which integrates the fruity component without overpowering it. This careful technical management preserves the identity of Barolo, enhancing its natural richness. The result is a wine of remarkable solidity, capable of guaranteeing extraordinary flavour persistence over time.

Through all these years the winery has maintained the original family run structure: Elio and Lucia’s eldest daughter Silvia has been fully involved in the winery since early 2000, while Elena, their youngest daughter, moved to Germany where she is now running a small wine import company. Elio, his wife Lucia, Silvia and the entire staff follow every single aspect of the work: in the vineyards from pruning to harvest, in the cellar from winemaking to sales, logistics, office work and marketing.

Elio, as energetic and bubbly as 40 years ago, supervises all the activities, but lately has been focusing as well on some challenging new projects, including winemaking in Cinqueterre, Liguria; restoring an old abandoned village in Castelmagno (in the mountains between Piemonte and France); cheesemaking in Castelmagno; growing medicinal herbs; making sparkling wine in the higher Langa hills with an old obscure indigenous variety called "Liseiret;" growing organic vegetables and fruits…our family will never run out of ideas and work!
