Description

What kind of wine it is

The Barolo by Elio Altare is a red wine of great character, an authentic expression of the Nebbiolo grape variety at the heart of Piedmont. To the eye, it displays a ruby red colour enriched with garnet reflections. The bouquet is elegant, with clear notes of red fruit, while on the palate the sip is warm and harmonious. The structure is distinguished by a defined yet smooth tannic texture, leading the drink towards a floral violet finish, a sign of extreme aromatic purity.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from vineyards located between La Morra and Castiglione Falletto, areas renowned for the production of Barolo. In this region, the family has been tending the vines since 1948. The rows are between twenty and thirty years old, with yields limited to five tonnes per hectare, thus ensuring extraordinary aromatic concentration. This meticulous approach allows the essence of the Piedmont hills to be transferred into the glass.

How it is produced

The vinification process involves a short maceration on the skins in rotofermenters at a controlled temperature for about four or five days, encouraging optimal extraction of colour and aromas. Subsequently, the wine matures for twenty-four months in French barrels, acquiring complexity and balance. To fully enjoy its expressive evolution, it is recommended to decant the bottle for an hour before tasting.

History and Curiosities

This Barolo DOCG from Elio Altare encapsulates the essence of a family that, since 1948, has been producing excellent wines in La Morra. Created to celebrate the beauty of the Piedmont hills, the wine is crafted from Nebbiolo grapes vinified in modern rotofermenters and matured in French barriques for 24 months. This meticulous care imparts an enveloping structure and soft tannins, qualities highlighted by 96 points from Decanter and 93 from Parker. A masterpiece of tradition and elegance that stands alongside the estate's prestigious crus, offering an unforgettable finish with clear notes of violet.

Through all these years the winery has maintained the original family run structure: Elio and Lucia’s eldest daughter Silvia has been fully involved in the winery since early 2000, while Elena, their youngest daughter, moved to Germany where she is now running a small wine import company. Elio, his wife Lucia, Silvia and the entire staff follow every single aspect of the work: in the vineyards from pruning to harvest, in the cellar from winemaking to sales, logistics, office work and marketing.

Elio, as energetic and bubbly as 40 years ago, supervises all the activities, but lately has been focusing as well on some challenging new projects, including winemaking in Cinqueterre, Liguria; restoring an old abandoned village in Castelmagno (in the mountains between Piemonte and France); cheesemaking in Castelmagno; growing medicinal herbs; making sparkling wine in the higher Langa hills with an old obscure indigenous variety called "Liseiret;" growing organic vegetables and fruits…our family will never run out of ideas and work!
