Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Bussia Romirasco by Aldo Conterno is a still red wine from Piedmont with a structured profile. To the eye, it appears a light ruby red colour enriched with garnet reflections. The bouquet is intense, with notes of sour cherry jam, raspberries and plums, accompanied by delicate hints of violet. Hints of cocoa and leather then emerge, along with liquorice, tobacco and vanilla. On the palate, it expresses remarkable volume and breadth, evolving with elegance. The sip finishes with a persistent finish, characterised by clear reminders of raspberry, plum and cherry.

Where it comes from

This wine is produced in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, within the renowned Bussia cru. The grapes come exclusively from the Romirasco vineyard, which is home to historic vines aged between fifty and fifty-five years. The rows are entirely planted with Nebbiolo. The Aldo Conterno winery is a key reference point for the region; its agricultural management delivers a faithful expression of the original vineyard, fully respecting the identity and prestige of Barolo.

How it is produced

Production begins in mid-October with a manual harvest and a rigorous selection of the grapes. Vinification involves alcoholic fermentation accompanied by a thirty-day maceration on the skins in steel tanks. After racking, the wine matures in large Slavonian oak barrels for thirty months. This lengthy ageing process stabilises the aromas and gives great balance, making it ideal for accompanying structured dishes such as braised meats, roast veal, game and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded by Aldo Conterno in the 1960s, the winery produces this exceptional Barolo Bussia D.O.C.G., a true symbol of the prestige of Monforte d’Alba. Born from the renowned Romirasco vineyard, the wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes hand-picked from vines over fifty years old. The 2021 vintage enhances the Michet and Lampia clones, reaching heights of excellence recognised with 96 points from James Suckling. A historic legacy brought to life in a red wine with a broad palate and an extraordinarily persistent finish.

Aldo Conterno founded his winery in the sixties, after the division of the legacy of his father James, one of the central figures of Italian post-war. Today the company, a sort of monumental fortress in the center of Bussia Monteforte, is undoubtedly one of the biggest names not only of the Langhe, but around the world of Italian wine. Here are some of the greatest Barolo born of history, beginning with numerous memorable versions of Granbussia, a reserve produced only in great vintages. The current style is affected to a greater extent than before, the contribution of the oak, however, preserving adequate structural strength and a careful extraction of tannin. Read more
