Description
What kind of wine it is
The Lagrein from Abbazia di Novacella is a still red wine with Denomination of Controlled Origin that expresses the characteristics of Alto Adige through the use of Lagrein grapes, vinified in steel and matured in oak barrels. To the eye, it displays a ruby red colour tending towards dark garnet, enhanced by lively violet hues. The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of wild berries, cherry and violet, gradually enriched by elegant hints of cocoa and vanilla. On the palate, it reveals a medium-full structure and a velvety entry, supported by balanced savouriness and firm tannins, finishing with a persistent spicy aftertaste that makes it ideal paired with game dishes, roast meats and cheeses.
Where it comes from
The vineyards of Abbazia di Novacella are located around Bolzano, specifically in the San Quirino area, along the sunniest mountain slopes. The vines grow at an altitude of about 260 metres, sinking their roots into alluvial soil. This specific pedological matrix, formed by river deposits, is characterised by a silty-sandy composition and a significant presence of porphyry. Such a geological structure ensures optimal ripening of the grapes, encouraging the development of a clear aromatic profile. The care of the land is entrusted to a historic monastic community, founded in 1142 and deeply connected to the local agricultural territory.
How it is produced
Vinification begins at the end of September with a careful harvest of the grapes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of about 28 degrees, accompanied by a fifteen-day maceration on the skins. This delicate process, carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, ensures optimal extraction of colour and polyphenolic components. Once this phase is complete, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to acquire greater softness. Maturation continues for six months in oak barrels, a fundamental step to integrate the dense tannic structure and enhance the aromatic nuances.
History and Curiosities
Born in the renowned Abbey of Novacella, founded in 1142, this wine embodies the prestigious heritage of one of the few monastic wineries still in operation. The Lagrein grapes grow in particularly suitable vineyards between Bolzano and San Quirino, where a centuries-old winemaking tradition is expressed in exceptional reds. Tasting this authentic Alto Adige DOC means savouring a masterpiece of history and dedication: a symbol of ancient traditions handed down by the monks, which returns in the glass the noblest soul of the South Tyrolean mountain landscape.

Also owned by the Abbey is a vineyard located in South Tyrol's main wine-growing area: the Marklhof estate in Cornaiano, on the 'wine road' near Bolzano. The sandy, dry soil and the airy climate of these hills make it possible to obtain excellent red wines, including a characteristic Kalterersee, a very fine Schiava and a very elegant Pinot Noir.
A third Novacella vineyard is located in Bolzano, around the ancient and tiny St. Mary's Monastery. Here, in the dry and very warm climate of the valley floor, a full-bodied dark Lagrein matures, which is particularly suitable for ageing.
In our wine cellar, the grapes from these three vineyards are raised to wines whose distinct character and quality has been rewarded by the loyalty of generations of friends and connoisseurs. Read more
