Description
What kind of wine it is
Derthona Sterpi by Vigneti Massa is a still white wine from Piedmont, made from Timorasso grapes, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in steel. It displays a bright straw yellow colour and a defined, intriguing aromatic profile. On the nose, clear notes of Golden Delicious apple, kiwi and lemon sweets emerge, enriched by delicate floral hints, captivating smoky nuances and deep mineral undertones. On the palate, it is vibrant, characterised by a taut and sharp citrusy structure, while the pleasant savoury drive accompanies a smooth progression towards a persistent finish that faithfully recalls the entire aromatic spectrum.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Piedmont, on the renowned Hills of Tortona, a region closely linked to this grape variety and the work of Vigneti Massa. The vineyards grow at around two hundred and eighty metres above sea level, in a pedoclimatic condition that ensures precision and expressive clarity. The winery follows an organic and sustainable philosophy, limiting interventions in the field to preserve the balance of the natural ecosystem. This artisanal dedication aims to enhance the authentic territorial connection, offering a glass deeply rooted in its place of origin.
How it is produced
The vinification process begins with a spontaneous fermentation triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts. Maturation takes place over ten months in steel tanks in close contact with the fine lees, a fundamental practice to give volume to the palate and stabilise the aromatic components. A further six months of rest ensures the perfect integration of every flavour nuance. The result is an extremely clean white, in which fruity aromas blend with pronounced mineral traits in a dynamic and lively tasting experience.

Massa Vineyards is the name of the family winery, founded by Walter's ancestors in 1879, which today boasts 23 hectares of property on the hills of Monleale, about 300 meters above sea level. We find the typical vineyards of the territory: Barbera, Croatina, Freisa and above all Timorasso, for which are reserved for 10 hectares. In line with the long family and territorial tradition, these vineyards are cultivated with dazzling attention anda lot of common sense, minimizing treatments. An enemy of all forms of bureaucracy and always against the tide, Walter is convinced that wine is made in the vineyard and in the cellar and not with brands and documents. This is why he chose not to use appellations for many of its labels, thanks to his well-established reputation true artisan of wine.
Walter Massa's production line is represented by Timorasso, which under the name Derthona has now established itself throughout Italy as white wine typical of the Tortonese Hills. Nevertheless, there are even great red wines too, produced with Freisa, Barbera or Croatina. These are unique and unconventional wines, the result of the skill and creative flair Walter Massa: a real oenological pearl of an area with very high potential. Read more
