Description
What kind of wine it is
Derthona Montecitorio by Vigneti Massa is a still white wine from Piedmont, a pure expression of the Timorasso grape variety in the Colli Tortonesi area. On the palate, it stands out for its structured and savoury style, characterised by a distinct mineral imprint and designed to offer precision and depth. The vinification, carried out exclusively in steel, balances the integrity of the fruit with remarkable complexity. The flavour profile harmonises ripe aromas with a pronounced saline tension, ensuring a clean and lingering finish.
Where it comes from
This label originates in Monleale from the grapes of the prestigious Montecitorio cru. The vines sink their roots into rich clay-limestone marl soils, a geological matrix that gives the wine its typical savoury backbone. Vigneti Massa has cultivated these slopes since 1879, dedicating itself to enhancing Timorasso under the historic name Derthona. The hill also pays tribute to Carlo Mirabello, a pioneer of radio communications linked to Guglielmo Marconi, thus uniting viticulture with a celebrated chapter of Italian history.
How it is produced
The bunches, harvested at full ripeness, ferment and mature in steel, where careful ageing on fine lees and regular bâtonnage enrich the structure without the use of barrels. This technique preserves a pure interpretation of the original variety. In the glass, it displays golden reflections and releases intense aromas of candied citrus fruits, plum, toasted bread, cocoa butter and clear hints of magnesite. The entry on the palate is enveloping, with a vertical development supported by a vibrant mineral freshness that finishes with elegance and marked persistence.
History and Curiosities
This artisanal wine originates from the hills of Monleale, in the Tortona area, where the Massa family has been cultivating vineyards with deep dedication since 1879. Under the expert guidance of Walter Massa, who has tenaciously revived pure Timorasso, the estate enhances this ancient grape variety by linking it to the historic name Derthona. The prestigious Montecitorio cru owes its name to Carlo Mirabello, admiral and pioneer of radio, closely connected to Guglielmo Marconi. A glass capable of blending a vibrant territorial identity with the charm of Italian history.

Massa Vineyards is the name of the family winery, founded by Walter's ancestors in 1879, which today boasts 23 hectares of property on the hills of Monleale, about 300 meters above sea level. We find the typical vineyards of the territory: Barbera, Croatina, Freisa and above all Timorasso, for which are reserved for 10 hectares. In line with the long family and territorial tradition, these vineyards are cultivated with dazzling attention anda lot of common sense, minimizing treatments. An enemy of all forms of bureaucracy and always against the tide, Walter is convinced that wine is made in the vineyard and in the cellar and not with brands and documents. This is why he chose not to use appellations for many of its labels, thanks to his well-established reputation true artisan of wine.
Walter Massa's production line is represented by Timorasso, which under the name Derthona has now established itself throughout Italy as white wine typical of the Tortonese Hills. Nevertheless, there are even great red wines too, produced with Freisa, Barbera or Croatina. These are unique and unconventional wines, the result of the skill and creative flair Walter Massa: a real oenological pearl of an area with very high potential. Read more
