Description
What type of wine it is
The Vietti Barbera d'Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone from the Vietti winery is a still vegan red wine that expresses the character of the Barbera grape in its purest form. Produced in Piedmont under the renowned Barbera d'Alba appellation, this wine stands out for its full body and rich tannic structure, combined with fresh acidity and a distinct savoury mineral vein. On the nose and palate, it reveals juicy notes of black cherry, blackberry, vanilla and spices, offering a pleasant velvety sensation and a persistent finish. The structural complexity stems from careful vinification including maceration and a long ageing in wood, making it ideal for accompanying structured dishes.
Where it comes from
This Piedmontese red originates from the historic Scarrone vineyard, located in Castiglione Falletto in the heart of the Barolo territory. The grapes come from centenarian vines, planted back in 1918, which benefit from optimal south-eastern exposure. This extraordinary age of the plants naturally results in extremely limited yields, favouring the development of a remarkable aromatic concentration in the cluster. The planting density and careful agronomic management enhance the peculiarities of this exceptional hillside terroir, allowing the grapes to develop an authentic and profound expressive richness.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a rigorous selection in the vineyard and a pre-fermentative cold maceration to extract primary aromas and colours. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel vats for approximately two weeks, enriched by punching down, délestage and pump-overs, followed by a further period on the skins. Subsequently, the wine is racked and transferred to barriques, where it completes malolactic fermentation over four months, acquiring greater roundness. Finally, the process concludes with a prolonged resting period of about eighteen months, skilfully divided between steel, barriques and large casks.
