Description

What kind of wine is it

The Champagne Veuve Clicquot Cuvée Saint-Petersbourg Brut expresses the authentic character of its region of origin. Crafted according to the Traditional Method, it is made from a blend dominated by Pinot Noir, accompanied by Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. In the glass, it displays an intense yellow colour with golden highlights and a very fine perlage. The bouquet evokes aromas of ripe fruit, brioche and delicate dried flowers. On the palate, it reveals a rounded sip, finishing with a well-balanced harmony between structure and freshness every time it is tasted.

Where does it come from

This wine comes to life in the Champagne region, paying tribute to the historic shipments of 1814 to the courts of Saint Petersburg, an event that cemented the international reputation of Veuve Clicquot. The grapes are sourced from a rigorous selection of plots, including the renowned Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. The deep knowledge of the land imparts a distinctive and satisfying sensory profile, ideal for pairing with shellfish and seafood or to enhance a refined aperitif.

How is it produced

Production faithfully follows the practices of the Traditional Method. After the first fermentation, the blend is enriched with a significant addition of reserve wines, essential for imparting maturity and depth of flavour. Ageing on the lees, which lasts from three to five years, shapes the mousse and amplifies the aromatic intensity, encouraging the development of enveloping toasted notes of praline, honey and gingerbread. The final Brut dosage frames a long, savoury and persistent tasting experience.

History and Curiosities

Founded in Reims in 1772, Maison Veuve Clicquot dedicates this limited edition to the boldness of Madame Clicquot. In 1814, her historic shipments reached Saint Petersburg, winning over the Russian nobility. Today, the Cuvée Saint-Petersbourg celebrates that international success in an exclusive gift box. This Champagne, predominantly made from Pinot Noir, matures for three to five years on the lees to offer a very fine perlage and a perfect balance between structure and vibrant freshness, making every aperitif or toast memorable.

  • Start up year: 1772
In 1772, son to a family of bankers and textile merchants, Phillippe Clicquot owns a number of vineyards and decides to enstablish a wine business under the family name, pledging to have his wares "cross all boders".
On the label you can find the anchor, the comet and yellow label and this is the story behind the symbols of the house Veuve Clicquot. The anchor, the Christian symbol for hope and rigour, was chosen in 1798 by Philippe Clicquot, the founder of the House, as the cork brand, the only distinguishing mark in the era before labels. As a symbol of hope, the anchor was a perfect emblem for a young entrepreneur with faith in the prosperity of his newly founded business. Madame Clicquot continued to use the same cork brand when she took over the running of the House in 1805. In keeping the anchor emblem throughout the centuries, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin remains faithful to the signs and symbols of its roots. The comet: in what many took as a sign predicting an excellent harvest year, a comet shot across the Champagne sky in 1811. Madame Clicquot used grapes from this "comet harvest" to make the exceptional Vins de la Comète, which would forge the House’s reputation for excellence throughout the world. Much like a lucky star, the symbol of the comet has remained to watch over the destiny of the House of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin
The yellow label: between 1860 and 1870, the House entered a new era in systematizing the practice of dressing bottles. In 1873, a vintage wine receives a "special dressing": a yellow label. In 1876, the vintage Dry British market is too yellow ... the yellow is the mark of special vintages of dry wine (or dry) for the Anglo-Saxon market. The fold is taken, agents and customers requiring this distinctive original. The yellow label "V. Clicquot P. Werle is filed by Edouard Werle February 12, 1877. The dark color will gradually so that the difference between the two types of wine, Dry or raw, or more easily perceived by leaders in the dark cellar. By 1945, won the yellow labels on the pulse of crude Bertrand de Mun ... and remains a leading brand immediate recognition of bottles of the house!
The House's motto is : "Only one quality, the finest". A short lineage of just 10 Cellar Masters has led this quest for quality, thereby ensuring the continuity of the Veuve Clicquot style: strength and complexity.
