Description

What kind of wine it is

Collio Merlot by Venica is a still red wine with an intense ruby colour, made from Merlot grapes in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its youthful profile offers a smooth and enveloping sip. The bouquet blends forest fruits, such as blueberries and blackcurrants, with delicate hints of violet and tomato leaf. On the palate, it is juicy and medium-bodied, supported by light, velvety tannins that harmoniously balance freshness, herbal notes, and clear earthy undertones.

Where it comes from

Originating from the Collio area, this wine celebrates Friuli's tradition for Merlot grapes, introduced to the region as early as the nineteenth century. The unique characteristics of the land give the grapes a consistent herbal note, which intertwines harmoniously with the warmth of dark berry fruit. Careful vineyard management results in a glass with a structured and balanced profile, a pure and faithful expression of its native landscape.

How it is produced

After harvesting, vinification begins with a maceration of the grapes lasting around ten days. Fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and wooden barrels to encourage optimal phenolic extraction. This is followed by a maturation period of over a year in large wooden barrels, during which malolactic fermentation occurs. The result is a balanced structure that retains its distinctive aromatic clarity.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1930, the historic Venica & Venica winery celebrates its tradition with its Collio Merlot DOC. This elegant red wine pays tribute to the legacy of Count Teodoro de La Tour, who in 1869 introduced the renowned French grape variety to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Thanks to the expertise of oenologists Gianni Venica and Francesco La Coppola, the estate's forty hectares offer a faithful expression of the region. Expertly bottled twenty months after the harvest, this wine stands as a true testament to Friuli's winemaking history.
